Former California Gov. Jerry Brown had nothing but praise for President Joe Biden, but “nothing at all” to say about the vice president.
The Democrat who governed California for a total of 16 years reportedly “toughened up” when an NBC reporter asked him to comment on fellow Californian Vice President Kamala Harris.
Brown sang the praises of Biden as the “man of the hour” during the interview with NBC’s Peter Nicholas released Monday, effectively dismissing concerns about the president’s age. The frail commander-in-chief turned 81 on Monday, making him the oldest president in US history.
Brown, himself 85, commented on Biden’s age in the wide-ranging interview that touched on the 2024 election, the media and relations with China, leaving out comments about Harris, who served as California Attorney General from 2011 to 2017, all the time. under Brown’s leadership. Harris replaced Brown in the post after he served as AG from 2007 to 2011.
“He has nothing to worry about until he gets to 85,” Brown said of Biden.
“The fact is, there’s uneasiness in the electorate,” he told Nicholas about the prospects for the Democratic Party with Biden as the 2024 nominee. “I would say he’s the man of the moment. He’s there.”
“I don’t have a grand political strategy here from the Democrats,” the former governor continued. “It’s very challenging.”
But when the NBC reporter asked him for his opinion on Harris, the discussion took a different tone.
“I have no idea about this,” he said.
“Asked his opinion of Vice President Kamala Harris, who got her start in politics in California, Brown stiffened a bit,” according to the report. “The blasphemous former governor who opined freely on US-China relations, global threats and even Gregorian chants (read on) had nothing to share about a fellow Californian who is next in line of presidential succession”.
Brown, who served two separate terms as governor of California, let his views on the media be known, criticizing them for being “so damn stupid” while acknowledging that Biden was “responsible” for his response to the question from a reporter about whether he thought China was a tonic. President Xi Jinping is a dictator.
“But journalists want to fan the flames of conflict that leads to war because they’re so stupid. That’s my belief of your profession,” Brown said.
“When you’ve been in politics for 50 years, the first thing you have to learn is how to avoid an embarrassing question. This must be the first lesson,” he added.
Brown’s non-response to Harris was telling for critics who have worried about the vice president’s deep unpopularity and whether it will hurt his re-election bid.
“We’re going to have to win our re-election, there’s no question about it,” he told CNN in an interview Sunday as he weighed in on dismal polls showing former President Donald Trump beating Biden in key battleground states.
“I have a great sense of duty and responsibility to do everything I can, to be where the people are and not just talk to them, but listen to them and let them know what we’ve achieved,” has added
