Florida woman believes shih tzu died from mysterious dog disease sweeping states, has warning for pet owners

-

A heartbroken Florida pet owner believes her beloved shih tzu, Chowder, died of a mysterious dog disease sweeping America.

Trang Huyen posted a video of her sweet dog on TikTok, asking viewers to share the clip to “help other dog owners.”

How BizPac Review reported earlier this month Since mid-August, the Oregon Department of Agriculture has documented more than 200 cases of the highly contagious and sometimes fatal respiratory disease.

Cases of the disease have appeared in Oregon, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada and throughout the Northeast.

According to Huyen, Chowder liked to stay home and didn't “go anywhere,” including grooming or visits to the dog park.

She said she is “not sure” how her baby got the disease, but suspects it was “most likely [in] the front yard where many dogs from the neighborhood pass”.

Chowder, who was 10 years old, “had a full heart exam before he died,” Huyen said. “His heart was very healthy and without murmurs.”

He first noticed that Chowder had a “mild dry cough” and was lethargic. His breathing had slowed and he was retching, as if he wanted to throw up.

A great gasp and wet cough followed. Chowder's lungs were “expanding at a rapid rate” and he was having “trouble expelling mucus.” His tongue took on a “purple or blue” hue.

Little Chowder crossed the Rainbow Bridge just a few days later, they said DailyMail.com.

“I miss my best friend,” Huyen said in her TikTok video.

The grieving pet owner warned others to “avoid dog parks or high-traffic areas with dogs” and to separate sick dogs from healthy ones. He urged pet owners to remove their shoes before entering the house and disinfect their floors to try to prevent the spread of the disease.

Founded by Lee Asher The Asher House, which finds “forever” homes for dogs in need of a family. That of the organization Facebook The page has 5.6 million followers.

On Wednesday, he took to the platform to confirm that the disease had struck Asher's sanctuary, which serves as a temporary home for nearly 100 dogs.

Although he is not a vet, he wanted to share “what we have been through”.

“Yes, our sanctuary was affected,” he said. “We had about 80 dogs during the time of this disease. Eighty dogs, but only 20 of them got sick.”

Of the 20, a dog named Roo died. Another dog, Lady, “had to have 20% of her lung removed.”

Roo died just two days after she came down with 'kennel cough' and Asher noticed her breathing had become 'really bad'.

“My point is, as soon as your dog gets sick, take him to the vet,” he urged pet owners.

“The moment you see your dog, even if it's just a cough, in that situation, I can't tell you how important it is to be safe than sorry,” Asher said. “Don't wait a couple of days.”

Dr. Adam Christman is a veterinarian with over a million followers on TikTok.

According to him, the symptoms of the disease are very similar to kennel cough and canine flu. He warns that the “awful cough” can “turn into pneumonia”.

“Unfortunately, some dogs died or had to be euthanized because of it [the] the severity of his illness,” he said.

Christman cited reports that the disease is likely not caused by a virus, but by a “non-cultivable bacterium” that has been “minimally studied” and “is not well characterized.”

On the other hand, it seems unlikely that humans could pass the disease on to their dogs, although it cannot be completely ruled out. A vaccine, he said, would take years to come out.

Since there is no evidence for this disease, Dr. Christman suggests that pet owners “control the controllable.”

Make sure your dogs are vaccinated against Bordetella (kennel cough) and canine influenza, especially if you take your pets to daycare, boarding facilities or groomers. If possible, refrain from taking them to these places, and if you notice any symptoms, “definitely take them to the vet immediately to be evaluated.”
