A Las Vegas judge sentenced the convicted felon who lashed out at her in an attack last week in court.
Deobra Redden, 30, appeared Monday before Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus flanked by officers and held in handcuffs, orange gloves on her hands and a mesh “spit mask” on her face, as seen in video footage of the sentencing. .
Five days after the dramatic attack in the courtroom, Redden faced the sentence the judge was trying to pass last week on an earlier charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. Holthus sentenced him to 19 to 48 months in prison, but he now faces 13 new charges in connection with the brazen attack that left Holthus and a court marshal with injuries and a trip to the hospital.
“The last time we were here, arguments were concluded and the court had begun to pronounce sentence when an incident occurred,” Holthus said in court Monday.
“An incident initiated by Mr. Redden, which prevented the court from completing the sentence,” he added before continuing with the sentence that lasted about two minutes.
“Any other issues that may arise from the events that occurred last Wednesday will be dealt with at a future date by a different court,” Holthus said. “For the purposes of the record, I want to make it clear that I am not changing or modifying the sentence I was in the process of imposing last week before I was interrupted by the defendant's actions.”
Last week, courtroom video showed the judge denying Redden's attorney's request for probation on an attempted battery charge.
“I appreciate it, but I think it's time I try something else because I can't with this story,” Holthus said seconds before Redden was seen jumping over the bench and attacking the judge on the ground as others ran away . to come to her aid and apprehend the criminal.

“Our whole goal is to maintain public confidence and trust in the judicial system and let people know that it's a safe place to be, and this will not happen again,” Jerry Wiese II, the court's chief judge, said last week at a press conference, adding that more security personnel had been requested following the incident.
According to Clark County Detention Center online records, Redden is now additionally charged with coercion with force or threat of force, extortion, intimidating a public official with threat of force, disregarding the safety of 'a person with significant bodily harm. , assault by a prisoner or parolee, an unlawful act involving a liquid by a prisoner in confinement and seven counts of assault on a protected person, which presumably refers to Judge Holthus and to court officials, as reported by The Washington Post.
“Redden was jailed on $54,000 bond in connection with the attack, but he refused to return to court the next day on the new charges, so a judge rescheduled his next appearance in that case for Tuesday,” KSNV reported.
“He's been violent his whole adult life,” District Attorney Steve Wolfson said, noting that Redden's records show previous convictions for three felonies and nine misdemeanors.
