US District Judge Peter Sheridan struck down New Jersey's strict gun control measures declaring the state's AR-15 ban is unconstitutional.
Judge Sheridan based his ruling on the precedents set by the Supreme Court's Heller (2008) cases and the recent Bruen (2022) decision.

In his ruling, Judge Sheridan emphasized, “The AR-15 provision of the Assault Firearms Act is unconstitutional under Bruen and Heller with respect to the Colt AR-15 for home self-defense use “.
This ruling highlights the importance of protecting citizens' self-defense rights, especially in their own homes.
In particular, Judge Sheridan highlighted the impact of the Bruen decision, stating that he finds any blanket restrictions on firearms commonly used for self-defense unconstitutional.
While this decision was a major victory for Second Amendment advocates, Judge Sheridan upheld the ban on “high-capacity” magazines as included in New Jersey's broader ban on “assault weapons” .
Reacting to the ruling, New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin (D) expressed his intention to challenge Judge Sheridan's ruling on AR-15s.
