During a transcribed interview with the House Judiciary Committee, an FBI official revealed that at least one senior agent, along with potential others, had alerted social media companies to a possible “hack and dump” operation before of the 2020 election, they were aware of the authenticity of Hunter Biden’s laptop.
As the official House Judiciary Committee Twitter account noted, “Testimony reveals that the FBI knew the Hunter Biden laptop was authentic, but when a social media company asked about the authenticity of laptop, the FBI said “no further comment.”
FBI official Laura Dehmlow weighed in on discussions between the FBI and Facebook ahead of the social media platform’s decision to censor Hunter Biden’s laptop story ahead of the 2018 election. 2020. Dehmlow, the head of the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force (FITF), acknowledged that his former colleague Brad Benavides was undoubtedly aware of the laptop’s legitimacy, according to excerpts from his testimony.
When asked by the committee about other people at FITF who knew about the laptop, Dehmlow replied that he did not have exact information, but assumed that Brad Benavides, then head of the FITF section, was aware of it.
“You know who else at the FITF knew the laptop was real?” the committee asked, according to the transcript.
“Actually, no. I guess both my… yes, I would definitely say that [then-FITF Section Chief] Brad Benavides was aware,” Dehmlow responded.
“What about the individuals of the unit of Russia?” asked the committee.
“I would guess that [Russia] the head of unit was also aware of it. I’m pretty sure of that fact,” Dehmlow replied.
Dehmlow was accompanied by a Justice Department attorney during the interview. Excerpts from the transcript note that the attorney intervened to clarify whether Dehmlow knew for “certain” or if he was just “making deductions.”
Those transcript excerpts were included in a letter from Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) to FBI Director Christopher Wray. In his letter, Jordan requested names and records related to members of the bureau who were aware of the laptop’s existence and who had communicated with social media companies before the presidential election in 2020
The laptop gained significant attention when the New York Post published a story on October 14, 2020, revealing details about then-candidate Joe Biden’s involvement in his son’s business dealings based on the contents of the laptop. Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook limited the reach of the story to their large user bases.
Simultaneously, behind the scenes, FITF and other federal government entities were participating in routine meetings with social media companies, repeatedly warning them about a possible “hack and dump” operation. This information was highlighted in a recent Louisiana court ruling, which addressed government censorship.
According to Jordan’s letter, after the FBI had convinced the social media companies that the laptop was connected to a hack-and-dump operation, the bureau stopped sharing information, leading the companies to conclude that the New York Post story was part of Russian disinformation.
Dehmlow further testified during his testimony that he remembered a meeting or a hearing about a meeting in which someone on Twitter asked about the authenticity of the laptop. One of the FBI participants in the call confirmed that it was indeed genuine before another participant chimed in with “no further comment.”
Dehmlow’s testimony supports the claims of IRS Supervisory Special Agent Gary Shapely, who testified before the House Ways and Means Committee in May. Shapely revealed that the FBI had become aware of the laptop’s existence in October 2019, stating, “The FBI became aware that a repair shop had a laptop that allegedly belonged to Hunter Biden and that the laptop could contain evidence of a crime.”
