Some of the Gold Star family members of the 13 U.S. soldiers killed in Afghanistan gave an emotional tribute at the Republican National Convention, saying President Joe Biden never said their children's names out loud and saying that former President Trump will not forget them.
“When Hunter [Lopez] and the bodies of the other service members were returned to the U.S. … Joe Biden met the plane,” Hunter Lopez's father, Herman Lopez, said at the convention Wednesday. cancer that our sons and daughters lost with his watch.”
Biden has it repeatedly claimed –falsely– that her son Beau was killed in Iraq.
“Worse than that, he hasn't said their names out loud,” Lopez continued. “And during the debate last month, he claimed that no service members died during his administration.”
The United States withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in August 2021, resulting in the Taliban retaking the country and 13 American soldiers being killed.
The names of the 13 fallen soldiers are Sgt. Darin Hoover, Cpl. Hunter Lopez, Cpl. Daegan Page, Cpl. Humberto Sánchez, Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, Lance Cpl. David Espinoza, Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum, Lance Cpl. Dylan Merola, 20 Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, Sgt. Nicole Gee, Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, the man of the Marine Hospital Maxton Soviak and the staff of the army St. Ryan Knauss.
Fallen Soldier Sgt. Nicole Gee's aunt, Cheryl Jules, also spoke at the convention, saying that while Biden may have forgotten the deaths of the 13 fallen, they haven't.
He went on to praise former President Donald Trump, saying he has not forgotten the soldiers, saying “Donald Trump loves this country and will never forget the sacrifice and bravery of our service members. Join us in giving back to put back in the White House.”
At one point, chants broke out from the audience of “Never Forget.” The crowd also chanted the names of the 13 service members killed in the retreat.
Gee's mother-in-law, Christy Shamblin, also praised the 45th president, saying Trump recognized the soldiers' sacrifice.
“Joe Biden has refused to acknowledge his sacrifice,” he said. “Donald Trump knew all our children's names. He knew all their stories.”
The third day of the RNC also had various veterans speak about why they support Trump, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Florida, who served in the Air Force.
“The leadership we need to respect our military and understand the true cost of war can only be found in Donald Trump,” he said. “He will make America strong again. He will fight for the American war fighter.”
He later said that America must preserve peace by commanding the respect of the world.
According to survey carried out by the military times, 52% of veterans said they would support Trump in the 2020 election. In 2009 Gallup poll showed that military veterans of all ages tend to vote GOP.
Another veteran who spoke was World War II veteran Sgt. William Pekrul, who gave his support to Trump. “President Trump is coming back as commander in chief … I would re-enlist today,” he said.
Earlier, he criticized Biden for the state of the country, specifically on the world stage.
“It hurts my heart to see what our current president and vice president have done to the country that I love so well,” Pekrul said, referring to Biden. “Like us [get] Pushed by China, terrorists thrive in the Middle East and allow our own southern border to be invaded.”
Pekrul concluded his speech by saying he would attack any beach his country needed and concluded with, “God bless you. God bless our home and the United States of America.”
