‘Faking history’: Egypt goes ballistic on Netflix over Cleopatra’s career

An upcoming four-part documentary-drama produced by Netflix has made a serious mistake regarding the race of one of Egypt’s pharaohs, according to Egypt’s antiquities ministry. It seems that “woke capital” is distorting history.

“Queen Cleopatra,” released May 10, has black actor Adele James as the legendary lead. The move by Jada Pinkett Smith, the series’ producer and narrator, has angered Mostafa Waziri, head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, who said portraying Cleopatra as black is “a falsification of Egyptian history”.

Waziri said there was nothing racist about his comments, which were fully motivated by “defending the story of Queen Cleopatra, an important part of the history of Egypt in ancient times.”

Egyptian experts insist that Cleopatra had “white skin and Hellenistic features.” But don’t call that “woke up Netflix”…

An online petition on titled Netflix’s “Queen Cleopatra” has nearly 8,000 signatures. Alleges:

“Afrocentrism is a pseudoscience that pushes a group’s agenda to claim the history of Egypt and steal it from the real Egyptians. By using fake articles and zero evidence, they are still trying to falsify history” .

“Cleopatra was born in Alexandria, Egypt into the Ptolemaic dynasty of Greek descent. She was NOT black. This is in no way anti-black, and is simply a wake-up call to preserve the history and integrity of the Egyptians and the Greeks”.

“The show is clearly made to complement the Afrocentric movement, which claims to be the owner of the ancient Egyptian civilization, and to consolidate what the movement promotes. Egypt was never black and never white, Egypt is just Egypt. There are many great African/Black civilizations, but Egypt was/is NOT one of them. Sign the petition to stop the falsification of history!”

Meanwhile, Egypt has been critical of Netflix content. It recently demanded that the online streaming platform drop content that goes against its “social values,” such as Western-produced TV shows featuring gay and lesbian characters on screen.

So, in Egypt’s opinion, Netflix woke up is distorting history.
