CNN's Bakari Sellers engaged in a near-shouting match with members of a CNN panel Thursday as they debated whether Vice President Kamala Harris' appearance for sit-down interviews matters to voters.
Sellers clashed with political commentator SE Cupp and Tricia McLaughlin, Vivek Ramaswamy's former communications director, about whether voters are worried about Harris' lack of a seat. interviews since he launched his presidential campaign. Harris doesn't he sat down for a single interview since becoming the presumptive nominee on July 21, when President Joe Biden fell down of the 2024 presidential race and has instead spoken at rallies to friendly audiences.
Cupp said Republican nominee Donald Trump was able to “catch” Harris by answering questions from the media during his press conference Thursday at Mar-a-Lago. Sellers said Harris doesn't need to be interviewed by the media in order to appeal to voters.
“Don't have anybody worry about us, have somebody ask questions,” Sellers said.
“No, I talk to swing state voters all the time. They have questions, they want answers … because when fans ask them Bakari, when friends ask them, when surrogates ask them, they're not getting the real answer,” Cupp argued.

The panel discussed whether Harris would benefit from answering the questions directly, and Sellers argued that Harris' campaign rallies are proof that he's gaining momentum with voters without just being “online.” Cupp argued that Sellers would require any other candidate to sit for interviews.
“You're going to lose, and you're not the only person arguing that she doesn't need to do that. She's very much inside the Beltway, that's for us. You lose credibility when you do that. Because if it were anybody else, you'd be demanding that they sit down for ask questions. And you know what? It will make her a better candidate.”
McLaughlin clashed with Sellers as he pushed her to answer whether Trump's claim that his rally had more people than Martin Luther King Jr.'s “March on Washington.” it's worse than Harris not answering questions.
“It's a misnomer,” McLaughlin replied.
“So you can admit that Donald Trump lied when he said that?” asked the salesmen.
McLaughlin argued that Trump's comment is about “optics,” further noting that the election is the “least substantive” in modern history.
The Trump campaign has done it expected to get Harris off script as the vice president continues to enjoy her “honeymoon phase.” Trump and Harris have done it okay to participate in a Sept. 10 debate moderated by ABC News, although former Pres proposed to discuss it on September 4 with the moderators of Fox News.
