OpenAI Drama: Sam Altman Fired and Reinstated as CEO

In a year of wild tech stories, OpenAI’s drama is among the most gripping.

Just days after the company held its first developer conference, OpenAI’s board fired CEO Sam Altman. After five days, Altman returned as CEO, now with a more supportive board.

The extraordinary events began when Altman was fired during a Google Meet call with the board. The board also removed Greg Brockman, another co-founder and president of OpenAI.

OpenAI publicly announced Altman’s firing, citing concerns about his veracity. However, hours later, Altman posted on X that he loved working with the talented people at OpenAI and would have more to say about what’s next.

Brockman quickly resigned, but Altman returned to OpenAI headquarters the next day to negotiate his potential return. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reportedly moderated the discussion.

Talks broke down, with Nadella tweeting that Altman and Brockman would join Microsoft to lead a new AI research group.

OpenAI found a new interim CEO: Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Amazon’s streaming service Twitch.

However, OpenAI employees were not convinced. More than 500 employees signed an open letter calling on the board to resign and reinstate Altman and Brockman.

The drama continued when The Verge reported that Altman and Brockman could still return to OpenAI if the board members who fired him resign.

And Nadella, speaking on CNBC, said he was open to both options when asked if Altman would join Microsoft.

Eventually, Altman was reinstated as CEO of OpenAI and Microsoft gained more control over the company.
