On this tragic day in history, September 11, 2001, Americans and the entire world watched as two planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City while a third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
The Twin Towers in Lower Manhattan collapsed shortly after.
Passengers aboard a fourth plane, Flight 93, avoided further destruction by trying to regain control of their plane from the hijackers.
Because of this intervention, the hijackers crashed the plane in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The intended target of Flight 93 was likely the White House or the US Capitol, according to the George W. Bush Presidential Library.
