Democratic strategist James Carville warned Democrats on Monday not to get too confident about Vice President Kamala Harris' chances of victory as former President Donald Trump has historically outperformed his polling average.

Carville, on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” said there are numerous potential obstacles for Harris, noting in particular Trump's tendency to get a larger share of the vote than polls predict he will receive. “Democrats feel better. It's undeniable… I look at the polls and I remind people of a couple of things, Jake. First of all, most quants, and they're better at this than I am, say the vice president would have to win almost three points in the popular vote to win the Electoral College,” Carville told host Jake Tapper. “And I'd also like to point out that when President Trump runs, he's above the polling average. It did in 2016. In reality, the national polls were pretty good, but they didn't carry weight in the states.”
