Democratic strategist James Carville warned Democrats on Monday not to get too confident about Vice President Kamala Harris' chances of victory as former President Donald Trump has historically outperformed his polling average.

Trump currently has a 0.1% lead over Harris in the top seven battleground stateswhile the vice president has a 1.5% lead over the former president at the national levelaccording to RealClearPolitics averages. Carville, on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” said there are numerous potential obstacles for Harris, noting in particular Trump's tendency to get a larger share of the vote than polls predict he will receive. “Democrats feel better. It's undeniable… I look at the polls and I remind people of a couple of things, Jake. First of all, most quants, and they're better at this than I am, say the vice president would have to win almost three points in the popular vote to win the Electoral College,” Carville told host Jake Tapper. “And I'd also like to point out that when President Trump runs, he's above the polling average. It did in 2016. In reality, the national polls were pretty good, but they didn't carry weight in the states.”

“And then they gravitated to the states in 2020, and you would have thought he'd win those states by eight points. He didn't. President Biden didn't do that… People need to have some reality infused in their optimism “, he continued. “I'm glad people are feeling better. I'm glad people are excited. But anyone who looks at this with any sense of history, any sense of objectivity, sees that there are many potential pitfalls that we run into. And we have to recognize that and stop being giddy all the time.”

CNN's Van Jones on Monday expressed fear that the presidential race is virtually a tie between Trump and Harris, even though the vice president benefited from weeks of “positive press.” He also noted that he has an opportunity to climb in the polls after the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

“We don't want to be tied. I don't like being tied with Donald Trump because we've had over 20 days of positive press now. He's been falling down stairs, slipping on banana peels and getting his eyeball. We don't have to “We want to move forward,” Jones said. “This is our chance this week.”

Black voters in Georgia he said Sky News in a video on Monday endorsed Trump for his brash personality, business acumen and economic track record as president.

“Some people don't like him, but I think he's a smart businessman,” said one voter. “Some want to call it a hole, but I think it's an excellent hole.”
