Florida smokes Dems by moving nearly 1 million voters to GOP under Ron DeSantis

-

Florida is now a central bastion of Republicanism, mostly thanks to the successful and charismatic Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.

How is it? While Democrats used to lead Republicans by roughly 250,000 registered party voters when DeSantis was inaugurated in 2019, as of July of this year Republicans now outnumber Democratic voters by nearly a million, according to The voice of Florida.

That means “Florida shifted more than 1.2 million voters, or 8.81 percent, to the GOP on pure registration,” the local editor noted.

In other words, the state is now deep, deep red, with virtually no chance of Democrats ever regaining any advantage.

In fact, even the state's capital county, Leon County, a longtime bastion of liberalism, is now leaning to the right.

“Florida's capital county, where Democrats typically garner two-thirds of the vote and hold majorities on elected city and county boards, turned a lighter blue last month, according to voter registration records.” Tallahassee Democrat reported on Thursday.

“[A] The 20-year decline in the share of registered voters, combined with a dramatic increase in those choosing to identify as no party affiliation and the steady number of Republican voters, has reduced Democrats to precisely 49.859% of all the Leonese voters on July 1. “, the report continued.

By contrast, Democrats represented 53 percent of all county voters in 2016 and 67 percent of all county voters in 2000.

Democrats, meanwhile, have blamed that shift on DeSantis' election integrity measures, or what they call “voter suppression.”

For example, a new law signed by DeSantis increased restrictions and potential penalties for third-party voter registration groups that engage in fraudulent behavior.

“Under the new law, these organizations must re-register as aa [voter registration group] each election cycle and deliver the receipts to anyone who registers to vote,” according to Inside Ed. superior. “It also shortens the period in which they must deliver registration applications from 14 days to 10 and increases the maximum penalty for failing to deliver such applications on time to $2,500 per application.”

“The law also places restrictions on who can handle and collect registration forms, making it illegal for people convicted of felonies to register voters. (The bill also prohibited non-citizens from handling the forms, but a federal district court ruled that restriction unconstitutional in March.),” the report continued.

These rules sound fair and logical, right? However, these are exactly the same types of rules and laws that Democrats have found fault with:

“The law has had a chilling effect on third-party groups across the state, with some ceasing all voter registration activities for fear of being hit with large fines,” complained Inside Higher Ed, a leftist place

“The same effect has been felt on college campuses, where it is common for student organizations to hold voter registration tables or tables during events such as orientation and homecoming,” the complaint continued.

DeSantis has also been accused of “manipulating voting maps and destroying one of the largest expansions of voting rights,” as he claimed the guardian.

How did he gut voting rights? After Floridians voted to restore the voting rights of convicted felons, DeSantis passed a moderate law that simply required felons to first pay whatever they owed to society and their victims before their rights were restored.

But according to the left, even that is “voter suppression.” Never mind that more than two dozen states also require felons to pay their debts first.

“An analysis found that there are about 774,000 people in Florida disenfranchised because they owe money as part of their felony conviction, often more than $1,000,” The Guardian lamented.

“The study found that Florida blacks with felony convictions were more likely to be blocked from voting because of outstanding debt. Meanwhile, people with felony convictions face serious barriers to getting a job,” continued the complaint.
