Artificial intelligence is working to save the lives of America’s heroes. A new product from ReflexAI called HomeTeam was just launched this week, with the goal of preventing veteran suicide.
According to the company, every day, 17 veterans die by suicide, amid an ongoing mental health crisis across the country.
HomeTeam is a digital training tool that equips veterans with the skills and confidence to support their fellow vets through mental health challenges.
The program consists of four training modules: communicating support, talking about suicide, establishing safety and connecting with resources.
After completing a module, students are asked to test their skills by answering questions and interacting with an AI-based chatbot named Blake.
The person in the bot is a 35-year-old Navy veteran from Colorado Springs who faces several challenges that have affected his mental health.
HomeTeam users are encouraged to check in with Blake, using open-ended questions to get the bot to “come out of its shell” until it confides in the student what’s on their mind.
HomeTeam’s generative AI is designed to be “highly responsive and agile” while keeping the conversation on track.
Veterans were involved during the creation of HomeTeam, which was developed after ReflexAI was asked to present to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) ways to improve training for veterans in crisis.
The team conducted research with veterans, conducted focus groups, and participated in one-on-one interviews to develop the product.
HomeTeam was publicly launched on Veterans Day so that any organization or individual can access it for free.
The hope is that one million veterans will experience HomeTeam in its first year.
Dr. Harvey Castro, a board-certified emergency medicine physician in Dallas, Texas and a national speaker on AI in health care, weighed in on the potential benefits and risks of the new platform.
Castro said he believes the app has the power to educate people about effective communication strategies and recognizing warning signs, which is essential for early intervention.
However, he noted that the AI model could pose some limitations, such as oversimplified approaches and a lack of personalized touch.
There could also be concerns related to data privacy and the “digital literacy” of users, Castro added.
