NJ high school rocked as AI generated by “knot” of students is distributed

A New Jersey high school has been rocked by a New Age Nude photo scandal related to artificial intelligence.

In accordance with The Wall Street Journala student or group of students used an online AI tool to produce nude images of girls attending Westfield High School.

The drama began to unfold on Monday, October 16, when the boys at the school started acting “strange,” said one mother as she recounted her daughter’s thoughts on the matter.

The “strange” behavior sparked questions, which in turn led to a boy revealing the truth on October 20.

“At least one student had used an AI-based website to make pornographic images using photos of girls found online and then shared them with other boys in group chats. Westfield girls reported the situation to administrators of the school, who began interviewing boys who might have known more information,” according to the Journal.

Westfield High School principal Mary Asfendis had emailed parents that evening saying the images had since been deleted.

“This is a very serious incident. New technologies have made it possible to falsify images and students need to know the impact and harm these actions can cause to others,” he wrote, adding that he intends to teach children how to use AI responsibly .

Westfield Mayor Shelley Brindle also responded to the scandal, saying in a statement: “It’s hard to witness a situation where you see young girls traumatized at a vulnerable time in their lives.”

He added that he hopes the girls who were affected, who had their images used to create fake AI knots, will speak openly to police.

One victim is Dorota Mani’s 14-year-old daughter.

“I am terrified of how and when this will play out. My daughter has a bright future and no one can guarantee that this will not affect her professionally, academically or socially,” Mani said.

“At first I cried, and then I decided that I shouldn’t be sad. I should be mad and I should defend myself and the other victims,” added his daughter, Francesca, during a meeting this Monday at Mani’s house.

“In attendance were parents of other students, along with Brindle, [New Jersey state Sen. Jon] Bramnick, three city council members and one school board member,” the Journal notes.

The encounter came after a group counseling session at the school earlier in the day. During counselling, some of the girls expressed discomfort about continuing to go to school knowing that the perpetrator has not yet been identified.

“The incident has made some of her classmates rethink what they post online, she said, given how little control they have over how it can be used. Some, she said, deleted their social media accounts “, notes the Journal.

“We know there are creepy guys out there, but you’d never think one of your peers would rape you like that,” said one of the girls.

Politicians, for their part, responded to the scandal by proposing legislation that would criminalize the creation and distribution of pornography with artificial intelligence.

“Jon Bramnick, a New Jersey state senator whose district includes Westfield, is investigating whether there are existing state laws or pending bills that would criminalize the creation and sharing of such material. If not, he say he intends to write a bill that would do that,” according to the Journal.

“This has to be a serious crime in New Jersey,” he said.

He added that he has asked the Union County District Attorney to investigate what happened at Westfield High.

All this comes months after former Google CEO Eric Schmidt warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could be “misused by evil people” to cause harm, even death.

Speaking at the time at the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council summit in London, Schmidt specifically warned that AI is an “existential risk” to humanity.

“And existential risk is defined as many, many, many, many people injured or killed,” he said bluntly.

“There are scenarios not today, but reasonably soon, where these systems will be able to find zero-day exploits in cyber problems or discover new kinds of biology. Now, that’s fiction today, but their reasoning is likely to be true. And when that happens, we want to be ready to know how to make sure these things aren’t misused by evil people,” he added.
