A 15-year-old Georgia high school girl who brutally attacked a teacher earlier this year — a beating caught on video — has been sentenced to a year behind bars.

What is the background?

The attack took place on January 26 at Heritage High School in Conyers. The raw video shows the student getting in the teacher’s face and yelling, “I don’t care if you’re an adult or not! You’re not going to talk to me like that, you fucking idiot!”

The teacher, Tiwana Turner, told WAGA-TV that the girl was angry that her phone was confiscated.

Things quickly turned physical as the student repeatedly punched Turner and grabbed her hair before the pair fell through a classroom door and then hit the hallway floor. The student then stood over Turner and struck her repeatedly.

Turner’s right knee appeared to buckle midway through the fall, and after the student pulled away, Turner was heard saying, “My leg is broken.”

what happened next

Immediately after the attack, the student was arrested, taken to a juvenile facility and charged with aggravated assault. Rockdale County Public Schools told WSB-TV the student was suspended.

WAGA reported last week that a county assistant district attorney said the girl pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of a teacher (a felony) and a judge sentenced her to a year behind bars at a correctional facility. juvenile detention, followed by five years of supervised release. .

Turner was hospitalized with leg injuries and was unable to walk.

Turner recently spoke to WAGA, who reported that he remains out of work and needs crutches and a walker to get around.

“I can’t go to work, I can’t see my students. I can’t do anything I used to do. I can’t drive,” she told the station.

Turner added to WAGA that he has noticed a negative change in student temperament since he began teaching 27 years ago.

“I would say that if I had to start teaching with this generation of students, I wouldn’t have been able to do it,” he told the station.

Cell phones are part of the problem.

“Cell phones are able to bring them to school. It’s becoming a big problem. It’s like their livelihood,” Turner told WAGA. “You get it, some go crazy.”

Something else?

Turner noted to the station that he has received a lot of support since the attack, financial and otherwise, from people around the world.

“People who don’t know me have reached out to me. They’ve helped me. They’re praying for me. Supporting me,” she revealed to WAGA. “That kind of treatment that holds you up when you fall. […] I don’t take anything for granted.”

Nearly $29,000 has been raised through GoFundMe to help cover Turner’s expenses while he recovers.

Turner added to the station that she hopes the “young woman” who attacked her “grows from this” and gets “the help she needs.”
