Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Twitter, sat down with comedian Bill Maher Friday night for an interview on “Real Time.”
“You’ve talked about this ‘virus of the awakened mind’ in really apocalyptic terms,” Maher said. “You should explain why you don’t think it’s hyperbole to say things like ‘push civilization to suicide’. First of all, what is the Woke mind virus? And if we don’t deal with it, nothing can be done month”.

“I can’t stress this enough. We have to protect free speech … what happens with censorship, for those who defend it, at some point it’s going to turn against you.”

“I think we have to be very careful about anything that is anti-meritocratic and anything that results in the suppression of free speech,” Musk responded. “So, you know, those are two other aspects of the Woke Mind virus that I think are very dangerous is that it’s anti-meritocratic. You can’t question things. Even questioning is bad. So, you know, one another way… [it’s almost synonymous] with Cancel Culture.”
“And obviously people have tried to write you off many times,” Musk said, drawing laughter from the audience.
“Yes, many times. Every week,” Maher joked. “Left and right, I’ve had it from both sides.”

“My concern with Twitter was that it’s a bit of a digital town square, and it’s important that there’s reality and a perception of trust for a wide range of viewpoints, and there was a lot of censorship and we discovered a lot of things. with Twitter files, including a lot of government-driven censorship,” he added.
During their conversation, Maher and Musk discussed the tech giant’s acquisition of Twitter. Maher expressed his understanding of why the billionaire would want to own the social media platform, citing it as one of the “great problems and problems of civilization” facing American society today.
“I really can’t stress it enough, we have to protect free speech … As far as censorship goes, for those who advocate for it, at some point it’s going to turn on you,” Musk said.
