Elon Musk sets 'honey pot' trap for 'state actors' manipulating community notes on X

-

Questioning world leaders about an incarcerated American earned Elon Musk his own community notes tag and subsequent pushback against “state actors” gaming the fact-checking system.

With 166 million followers on his social media platform, X, Musk's reach and the amplification potential of any post remained undeniable. Following a reaction from the billionaire to a Tucker Carlson video about jailed US citizen Gonzalo Lira, as well as the videographer himself, Community Notes challenged claims about the man's arrest in Ukraine.

“What is the status of this US reporter @JoeBiden?” Musk captioned a post Lira made in late July about the man's stated effort to seek political asylum in Hungary. Although the prisoner's post was noted with the Criminal Code of Ukraine that the man is alleged to have violated, Musk was refuted by claims that Lira “was not a journalist but a video blogger” responsible for “political comments pro-Russians” and that he had been “arrested”. in Ukraine to make wartime propaganda, including denying massacres, and providing information about Ukrainian troops and journalists to the Russians.”

Musk seemed quite pleased with the response, referring to it as a trap for “state actors” and therefore easier for his team to remove.

“Interesting. This note is being played by state actors. It will be helpful to find out who they are. Thanks for jumping into the honeypot guys lmao!” posted the tech entrepreneur, who also received a tag from Community Notes that read: “There are criteria Community Notes contributors must meet to be approved that are supposed to prevent tampering.”

This note linked to the registration page to become a Community Notes contributor and the rules that accompanied participation.

As it had been previously reportedMusk had responded to Carlson's report on Lira and directly tagged President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for clarification on any mistakes that may have been made that the US government would ignore.

“An American citizen is in jail [in] Ukraine after sending more than… 100 billion dollars? Is there more to this story than simply criticizing Zelensky? If that's all, we have a serious problem here,” he said.

After calling out the “honey pot,” one concerned user questioned the integrity of the community notes, asking, “So you're saying community notes can be manipulated and used as a weapon?!”

To this, the billionaire replied: “No system is perfect. Perfection would be an absurd and silly standard. What matters is how often a system is bad and how quickly it improves. State actors have a lot of resources, because which obviously require more effort to resist.”

Entrepreneur David Sacks added his voice in defense of Community Notes referring to it as a “generally excellent system” played by the “Ukrainian information warfare operation”. He added that Community Notes' rating system allowed poor claims to be weeded out over time, and Musk responded positively: “The greater the credibility of any truth-assessment system, the greater the incentive to break -lo. Nobody cares about breaking something without credibility.”
