Former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that special counsel Jack Smith has informed him that he is the main focus of the January 6 investigation and needs to appear before a grand jury.
In a statement published on Truth Social, Trump expressed deep concern about the information his lawyers relayed to him. He assured that he received the letter on Sunday.
“Wow! Sunday night, while I was with my family, just coming from the Turning Point event in Florida, where I won the straw poll against the rest of the Republican candidates with 85.7%, with all the polls that showed me leading in the Republican Primaries by a very substantial margin. numbers, almost everyone is predicting that I will be the Republican nominee for president, and because I am leading Democrat Joe Biden in the polls by a wide margin, my lawyers gave me terrible news for our country,” Trump wrote.
“Deranged Jack Smith, Joe Biden’s DOJ prosecutor, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night) stating that I am a target of the Grand Jury investigation on January 6th and gave me about 4 days very short to appear before the Grand Jury, which almost always means arrest and indictment,” he continued.
“So no, Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, whom I turned down for the US Supreme Court (in hindsight, based on his corrupt and unethical actions, a very wise decision!), along with with Joe Biden’s Department of Justice, have effectively issued a third indictment and arrest of Joe Biden’s number one political opponent, who largely dominates him in the race for the presidency,” he added.
“Nothing like this has ever happened in our country before, not even close,” he continued. “They illegally spied on my campaign, attacked me with a totally bogus ‘dossier’ that was funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC, impeached me twice (I won!), failed the Mueller witch hunt (no collusion!), they failed in Russia deception, Russia, Russia, fraud of 51 “Intelligence” agents, FBI/Twitter files, censorship of the DOJ/Facebook and every other scam imaginable.”
“But on top of all that, I have not been effectively indicted three times (the DOJ staffed and runs the DA’s office in Manhattan), with a fourth likely coming from Atlanta, where the DOJ has a coordination strict and possibly illegal with the District Attorney, whose record in murders and violent crimes is abysmal,” Trump said.
“This witch hunt is about election interference and the complete and utter political weaponization of law enforcement!” added. “It is a very sad and dark period for our nation!”
The assignment letter indicates that Smith’s team is examining Trump’s actions as president before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Multiple reports indicate that former Trump aides have already testified before the grand jury, indicating that Smith’s investigation is reaching a crucial stage.
The development coincides with Trump’s significant lead in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, emphasizing how his legal challenges could disrupt the campaign.
In addition to the ongoing investigation, Smith is prosecuting Trump on charges of mishandling classified documents and failing to comply despite repeated requests. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing in this particular case.
Donald Trump was impeached for his handling of the January 6 riots, but was acquitted after a trial in the US Senate.
The news comes as an appeal has been filed in the US Supreme Court that could affect “hundreds” of cases from the January 6 trial, including Donald Trump’s grand jury trial.
