Authorities have confirmed that the deputy was following a stolen vehicle when one or more occupants opened fire and fatally struck the deputy. The chaotic scene was captured on video shared via social media, which showed Detroit police closing roads and rushing to take the deputy to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter expressed his grief and support in a heartfelt statement: “I am heartbroken to learn of the shooting death of one of our Oakland County Sheriff's deputies. If please keep him, his loved ones and colleagues in the county in your hearts today. I have been in contact with Sheriff Bouchard to offer support to the Sheriff's Office employees during this difficult time.”
