Hollywood icon Denzel Washington recently shared some heartfelt memories of his late co-star and friend, Whitney Houston. The two shared the screen in the 1996 film “The Preacher's Wife” and formed a close bond during their time together. Houston tragically died in 2012 at the age of 48 due to accidental drowning.
Washington discussed his relationship with the singer and actress during a career retrospective at the American Black Film Festival in Miami. She expressed a protective feeling towards Houston, stating, “I always felt like I wanted to protect her. I wanted to be so tough, but I really wasn't.”
The film, a remake of the 1947 classic “The Bishop's Wife,” also starred Courtney Vance. Vance, who played Houston's husband in the film, spoke fondly of his time with her. “To be able to play her husband, I was in a state of euphoric shock,” she said. “I loved her so much. It was a turning point in my life and Whitney was a huge part of that.”
Despite their close working relationship, Vance admitted he was unaware of the extent of Houston's struggles with substance abuse at the time. “We were on set together and we respected each other,” he said. “But I didn't go into the depth of what was going on in his life.” These revelations provide a poignant insight into the late superstar's private life, reminding us of her lasting impact on those who knew her both on and off the screen.
