The Democratic district attorney who was supposed to prosecute Laken Riley's killer has resigned over concerns that she is not equipped for the job.
“I have real concerns about his ability to handle this case,” Georgia state representative Houston Gaines, a Republican, told reporters Monday, according to the Flag of Athens-Herald.
By “her,” he meant Athens-Clarke County District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez, a Democrat who reportedly had no experience prosecuting criminals before taking on the role of prosecutor in 2020.

According to local attorney Kevin Epps, he also “has failed to obtain a guilty verdict in a jury trial involving any type of criminal case.”
“We currently have a district attorney who is completely incapable of prosecuting this case properly,” he told the Atlanta station. WSB.
“Epps is suing Gonzalez on behalf of an Athens bar owner, accusing her of being unwilling to do her job. Epps said she believes Gonzalez and her office are ill-equipped to prosecute the suspected 'murder accused of killing Riley,' the station notes.
Gonzalez has also been sued by Susan Wilson.
“Wilson filed his motion after he received a call from the DA's office the day a plea deal was offered to the alleged drunken driver who killed his partner of 37 years,” according to the Atlanta station. WXIA. “I was teaching and couldn't answer the phone. He didn't get the message until later that afternoon when the hearing was over.
In a statement to the station, Wilson said: “It was like I was sitting in the emergency room again waiting to talk to the coroner. Because it was terribly unfair. Not only was I not given the opportunity to 'to be in a courtroom, but I learned that the plea agreement had reduced the charges to misdemeanors and that he had been given probation.'
Back to the present, Gonzalez has indicated she is not interested in pursuing the death penalty against Riley's alleged killer, criminal illegal alien Jose Ibarra:
The death penalty should be sought for José Ibarra. But Athens District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez has said she will not seek the death penalty, saying she will “consider the collateral consequences of undocumented defendants.” I sincerely hope it changes course. pic.twitter.com/m4ufqOulOP

Now fast forward to Friday, when Gonzalez announced, apparently in response to all the criticism, that he would assign a special prosecutor to the Ibarra case.
“In a statement, Gonzalez stated that Shelia Ross of the District Attorney's Office will return to the Western District to prosecute Jose Antonio Ibarra, the man arrested in Riley's murder. Gonzalez said her office will not allow this or otherwise be used for political gain,” according to the local broadcaster WUG.
Ross has experience with death penalty cases:

Critics on social media responded to Gonzalez's announcement, arguing that if he doesn't have what it takes to prosecute Ibarra, he may need a new job.

If you need a “special prosecutor” just to handle a high-profile murder case, you shouldn't be the elected prosecutor.

As previously reported, last week Ibarra was named in the murder of 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student Laken Riley, a woman who, according to reports, not even had met
“The killing of Laken Hope Riley, a junior on the dean's list at Augusta University, appears to be a 'crime of opportunity' by 'a person who woke up with bad intentions,'” said Chief University of Georgia police Jeff Clark Friday. news conference,” according to CNN.
“Campus police said they are recommending charges against Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, of Athens, including felony murder, false imprisonment, kidnapping and concealing the death of another in Riley's slaying” , CNN reported.
Riley's death caused a massive backlash given that she would likely still be alive if not for federal and local government leniency for criminal illegal aliens.
González is not the only leftist in the city. As also previously reported, the sheriff in the Georgia county where Riley was killed had campaigned not to cooperate with immigration officials.
