Democratic Rep. Katie Porter believes the country's immigration laws should not be determined by “one case” of murder by a migrant.
The California Democrat sparked outrage when she told CNN's Erin Burnett that the “horrific” killing of nursing student Laken Riley on the University of Georgia campus should not “shape” the “global politics of immigration” from America.
Porter, who is running in the March 5 primary election to represent California in the U.S. Senate, was criticized for the “absolutely disgusting” comments on social media after appearing on CNN's “Erin Burnett OutFront” on Monday and appeared to downplay the fact that the suspect, Jose Antonio Ibarra, is a Venezuelan migrant who crossed the US-Mexico border illegally in 2022.
Porter's comments came after Burnett's summary of Ibarra's condition and record.
Katie Porter is literally unbearable.
How ill-informed/shameless do you have to be to act as if the death of an innocent American citizen at the hands of an illegal alien was a one off thing? evil people https://t.co/vuZzTvHJ8G

“Well, I think when a horrible tragedy like this happens, I think whenever we're dealing with violent crime, there's a sense of outrage and sadness and loss,” said Porter, a member of the House Oversight Committee . .
“But I think the important thing to focus on is that any one instance should not shape our overall immigration policy, which has so many different facets, including economic choices about what workers allow and how to create prosperity in the United States,” he added. .
“So the situation is tragic and it's a loss and it's important to recognize that, but also to recognize all the other, how all the other parts of immigration policy fit together,” Porter said.
Discussing the rise in illegal border crossings and the sharply criticized policies of the Biden administration, Porter said closing the US southern border would not solve the problem.
“I think we've seen under Title 42 and some other policies that efforts to just quote, close the border don't really solve the long-term problem, which is that we haven't put the resources and the policies at the border, so we have all kinds of chaos and challenges, from not having enough immigration judges to not investing in technology that could help a screen for fentanyl, which I voted for, but we need to do more to recognize that we haven't met our promise to the Dreamers,” Porter later stated. “All of these things come together to create the kind of chaotic immigration policies that we see.”
The Democrat's resistance to the need for policy change in the wake of Riley's killing sparked a furious response on social media.
They don't even try to hide it anymore. @ElsDemòcrates I want you to know that they don't care about Americans getting killed, they just want open borders. https://t.co/7bI4YmCHQp

What a disgusting thing to say.

What she says here is nonsense, though. This is not a case of abuse of a constitutional right; we already have an immigration policy and it is not being enforced. The demand is not for it to change, but for it to remain.

Pretty much exactly what psychosocial gun abusers do with “mass shootings”. The difference is that good immigration policy would actually solve this problem.

It's not an incident. It's the latest incident.

Democratic Rep. Katie Porter is brain dead. One case is not shaping overall immigration policy. We have had 3 years to see how bad Biden's open borders are, seeing our cities overrun by millions of illegals.#LakenRiley he is not the only American killed by illegals. https://t.co/BvNWpozzOk
