Dem defunds Austin police under fire to demand enhanced patrols around his home

-

In what is being described as “the height of hypocrisy” for Democrats, a progressive lawmaker is under fire for calling for police patrols in his home after previously calling to defund the same department.

Just days after Rep. Gregorio “Greg” Casar of Texas openly criticized the Austin Police Department, and after his stint at city hall where he called to defund the same department, Casar reportedly “called for enhanced patrols at home his,” according to the Austin Police Retired Officers Association.

“It's been brought to our attention that the anti-police kingpin of Austin's defunding movement @GregCasar, who just last week called out APD as an agency with racist practices, has called for increased patrols at his home for next week,” APROA posted on Tuesday at X.

“We want everyone in Austin to feel safe,” the group's post continued. “But this seems like the height of congressman's hypocrisy to us. Maybe he should hire private security like his squadmates do. It sure seems like he wants the police in his neighborhood but not yours.

The Austin Police Department received Casar's forwarded request from U.S. Capitol Police in Washington, D.C., and it was confirmed by Fox News Digital, which noted that a spokesperson for the federal agency said which “does not discuss any of the potential security measures available to all members of Congress” for “security reasons.”

Austin is still feeling the effects of the police shortage and officer retirements that followed the 2020 national unrest following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota. As a member of the city council at the time, and like members of the “Squad” in Congress, Casar had been a vocal advocate of defunding the police.

Just last week, Casar would have unloaded on the police department in one letter in the Department of Justice. The progressive Democrat called attention to the “need for systemic reforms to the Department's excessive and lethal use of force policies and practices, racial discrimination, and discrimination against people with mental health issues.”

Casar's blatant hypocrisy sparked a wave of criticism.

“A week ago, he said the Austin Police Department was a racist department targeting black and brown people, and this week he's asking the exact same department to do enhanced patrols around his home,” said Dennis Farris, president of ' APPROACH. Fox News Digital.

“It doesn't matter what political party they're in. If they ask for our help, we'll give it to them,” Farris continued. “The last thing we want is for something to happen to them. My problem with that and the problem most of my members will have is the fact that this guy, you know, is the whole thing about the team, right? It's the whole, 'We hate the police, we hate the police, we hate the police.' Oh, please come help us now. He's the architect. He's the architect of the defunding of the police in Austin. It started this whole mess.”

Travis County GOP Chairman Matt Mackowiak blasted Casar as a “fraud.”

Attorney Adam Loewy noted the hypocrisy as an “interesting juxtaposition.”

The Austin Police Department is “aware of the request made by Representative Greg Casar,” according to a spokesperson who told Fox News Digital that they are “following the same protocol and evaluation as we would with all requests.” .

“Our agency takes all public safety concerns seriously. Our priority is to have a safe and secure community so everyone feels protected while maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information,” the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, in a response to Fox News Digital, Casar's office said it “does not comment on active security matters involving the Congressman.”

“Our office has not communicated with the Austin Police Department regarding this matter because these issues are handled by the U.S. Sergeant at Arms, who then works with the U.S. Capitol Police and local agencies in law enforcement,” the lawmaker's office added, citing a statement from US Army Sergeant at Arms William McFarland.

“The sergeant-at-arms takes the safety of members of Congress very seriously,” the statement said. “We ask the public and law enforcement not to comment on specific security measures or active cases because doing so exposes potential vulnerabilities.”
