Deadly cough syrup scandal: Indonesian company executives convicted of causing more than 200 child deaths

-

The director and three other senior officials of an Indonesian pharmaceutical company have been jailed for their involvement in the production of cough syrup linked to the tragic deaths of more than 200 children. The company, known as Afi Farma, was found guilty of intentionally producing pharmaceuticals that failed to meet critical safety standards.

According to prosecutors, between October 2021 and February 2022, Afi Farma received two batches of propylene glycol, a substance commonly used in the production of cough syrup. Shockingly, these batches contained dangerously high levels of ethylene glycol, ranging from 96% to 99%. While propylene glycol is non-toxic and widely used in various products, ethylene glycol is highly toxic and is commonly found in industrial products such as paint, pens and brake fluid.

The company did not do adequate testing of the ingredients used in its cough syrup, and relied on the quality and safety certificates provided by its supplier. This negligence and disregard for safety rules has now had serious consequences for the company and its managers.

The tragic loss of more than 200 young lives in Indonesia, as well as reported deaths in Gambia and Uzbekistan, have prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to issue warnings about six cough syrups produced in India and Indonesia.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for strong drug regulation and vigilant oversight to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. The world watches as the court proceedings unfold, seeking justice for the victims and their families.
