DCNF reporter details how Merrick Garland didn't 'get involved' with 'claims' in op-ed

A Daily Caller News Foundation reporter discussed the inaccuracies in an article by Attorney General Merrick Garland during an interview Monday.

DCNF Supreme Court Reporter Katelynn Richardson he said Newsmax radio host Rob Carson that people disputing Garland's June 11 Washington Post op-ed had “so many places” to start questioning the politicization of the Department of Justice. The FBI and Justice Department have faced accusations that they have been politicized in related cases defenders of lifetwo accusations against former President Donald Trump, the handling of investigations against Hunter Biden and parents protesting at school board meetings.

“There are so many places we can start,” Richardson told Carson. “I think we can start with his claim that any claim that the DOJ was involved in the Trump case in Manhattan is a conspiracy theory.”

Richardson pointed to then-top DOJ official Matthew Colangelo took a role as lead counsel during the Trump business records trial, which resulted in Trump's May 30 conviction on 34 offenses of falsifying business records. He also pointed to special counsel Jack Smith's efforts to have Trump tried on charges related to classified documents and efforts to run in the 2020 elections done before the election.

“If you look at the Trump DC case, Special Prosecutor Jack Smith has made every effort to rush this case to trial before the election,” Richardson said.

Carson noted that Colangelo's departure, Smith's appointment and a visit to the White House by Nathan Wade, who served as special counsel and lover to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, all came in a short period of time.

“I think the timing is certainly interesting and I think this is something that Merrick Garland should have addressed in his op-ed,” Richardson said. “He didn't raise any of that, he didn't commit to any of those claims. Also, last week, FEC Commissioner Trey Trainor testified before Congress and talked about how he should have DOJ intervened in this Manhattan case.”

Carson also noted use of a laptop computer abandoned by Hunter Biden that was the subject of an October 2020 report by the New York Post during his trial on federal firearms charges brought by special prosecutor David Weiss. Dozens of former intelligence officials signed on a letter from October 2020 published by Politico that claimed the New York Post's bombshell report on the laptop emails “has all the classic tags of a Russian intelligence operation.”

The DCNF confirmed authenticity from one of the emails from October 2020. The Washington Post i News from New York confirmed the authenticity of the data in March 2022 in articles about the Justice Department's Hunter Biden investigations.

“They used the laptop in the test,” Richardson said. “Special Counsel David Weiss pulled evidence to use against Hunter Biden, there was an FBI agent on the stand who said he saw no evidence of tampering with the data, so this again , all verified… the laptop is indeed real.”
