County supervisor calls for end to sanctuary policies following illegal immigration arrests for murder

A Virginia county supervisor called for an end to sanctuary laws for illegal immigrants Monday after two murder suspects were confirmed to be living in the United States illegally, 7News reported.

Pat Herrity, Fairfax County Supervisor, the one Republican supervisor in the deep blue jurisdiction, calls on county officials to end laws that protect illegal immigrant criminals in the county, in accordance with 7 News. Herrity's public comments follow a brutal killing earlier this month along a popular hiking trail in Oakton, Virginia, with allegations that at least one of the suspected illegal immigrants benefited from sanctuary laws before the murder.

“You've clearly made Sheriff Chapman do that and keep his community safe,” Herrity told 7News, referring to how the sheriff in nearby Loudon County immediately notifies Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when his deputies they detain people who are in the country illegally.

“I think our residents expect the same from our sheriff. I think they're failing in their duty. Because when repeat violent offenders are released into our community, whether it's by magistrates, whether it's by the commonwealth's attorney or whether whether by the sheriff, this is unacceptable,” Herrity continued.

The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office previously confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation that it will not honor any ICE detainer without a warrant. His office reiterated that policy in the wake of the latest homicide investigation involving suspects who were living in the United States illegally.

“We need to keep violent criminals in prison or get them out of our country,” Herrity said.

On July 20, a body was discovered near a trail in the Oakton, Virginia area, and investigators determined the man died of blunt force trauma and stab wounds. seconds on Fox 5. Three men have since been arrested in connection with the murder: Wilmer Adalid Guzman-Videz, Maudin Anibal Guzman-Videz and Luis Alonso Portillo.

ICE confirmed to the DCNF that Wilmer Adalid, 20, and Maudin Anibal, 27, are Honduran nationals living in the United States illegally. Maudin Anibal has a long history with local authorities since 2023, having been charged with malicious assault, entering a building at night with intent to commit robbery and malicious wounding, among other alleged crimes.

Between October 27, 2022 and June 28, 2023, the ICE office in Washington, DC hosted several detainers for Maudin Anibal, but Fairfax County authorities ignored all of them and the they released from their custody, the agency told the DCNF. Those earlier arrests, and ignored ICE detainer requests, led to his arrest this month for murder.

Despite following their sanctuary policy, the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office told 7News they never received arrest requests for Maudin Anibal.

“If you're an American citizen and a violent felon, you're treated worse than if you're in the country illegally and a violent felon,” Herrity told 7News. “I mean, that makes absolutely no sense. I'm sorry, that doesn't make sense.”

Fairfax County has drawn national attention for its local laws that protect criminal illegal immigrants from ICE attention. The Washington, DC-based Immigration Reform Law Institute once included the jurisdiction of its “Ten Worst Sanctuary Communities” in the country and county drew wrath from former ICE chief Tom Homan after a police officer was suspended in 2019 for simply turning over an illegal immigrant to federal immigration authorities.

Earlier this month, ICE sued authorities in Fairfax County ignoring a detainee and releasing an illegal immigrant convicted of having sex with a minor back into the community.

The Fairfax County Jail has detained 725 illegal immigrants in the past twelve months, but only three were turned over to ICE, according to 7News.

The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the DCNF.
