According to resident Shari Angarano, the project was supposed to begin in March, with the paving of Colorados Drive. Crews began work, placing signs and preparing the area for paving. However, halfway through the project, the workers abruptly left, leaving the project unfinished and the road in disrepair.
Angarano contacted the City of Oakland to inquire about the situation and was informed that the contractor had pulled out of the project because crews did not feel safe in the area.
The situation has left the neighbors frustrated and angry. Angarano said the terrain is uneven and the gravel used to fill the potholes is being kicked up, making it nearly impossible to drive safely.
KRON4 they contacted the Oakland Department of Transportation and stated that the project would resume this week. The department said it is scheduled to be finished sometime this month, but residents are skeptical whether workers will return and finish the job.
The incident highlights the growing problem of security problems in some urban neighborhoods. Construction crews and other workers who maintain the infrastructure in these areas put their lives at risk when they work in these areas. The situation in the Sobrante park is a clear example of the problem, which leaves residents with roads in poor condition and without maintenance, putting their safety at risk.
