CNN's Harry Enten sounds the alarm that Trump is losing ground to Harris on his 'key issue'

-

CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten warned Monday that former President Donald Trump's campaign should be panicking about Vice President Kamala Harris gaining ground in the polls on the economy.

At the end of July, Trump had a 12-point lead over Harris economic questions, seconds to a Wall Street Journal poll. Enten, on “CNN Newsroom With Jim Acosta,” said the most recent polls don't show such a significant lead, and that's troubling for Trump because it's such an important issue for his campaign. “I want you to look here. These are the new poll numbers [the Financial Times and the University of Michigan Ross School of Business] survey, and I want you to look at: are you more confident about economic issues, this is national, come back in July, what do you see? You see Donald Trump with a six-point lead on the economy, jumping into August,” Enten told host Acosta. “And what do we see? We see something that's well within the margin of error, but we see movement towards kamala harris 42% trust harris more than 41% and movement here jim is a key thing we're seeing through of surveys”.

“You know me, Jim, if it's just in one poll, I wouldn't necessarily care, but when you see it in multiple polls, that's where it gets interesting. So you have more confidence in the economy. This is Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Those are the key swing states … We see in May that Trump had 55 percent to Biden's 41 percent on the economy in those three states,” he added. “Look at where we are now. Yes, Trump still leads on economic issues, but the lead has narrowed … from 14 points to now, just look at that, down to six points, down to six points … So now we have an economic race, within the margin of error on the key issue of Donald Trump.”

Enten also said that Harris leads Trump on whatever issue voters consider his top priority for them, regardless of what the issue is.

“I want you to look here. Trust more on the issue that's most important to you. This is June, this is national. What do we see in June? We see Trump with a 10-point lead over Joe Biden, 50% to 40% . Now, look at these key battleground states, Michigan and Wisconsin,” he said. “Now we have Harris at 50%, Trump at 48%. Again within the margin of error. But a 10-point lead for Trump in June. Now with a two-point lead from Harris, that's a type of move we're seeing across the board. It's not just these front-line issues. It's under the hood, and that should really worry the Trump campaign, especially on the economy.”

Surveyor Frank Luntz he said Monday that Trump's lead over Kamala Harris on the issues most important to Americans, the economy and immigration, is helping her electorally, but she must drop her “angry” communication style to defeat her.

“The key moment here will be the debates when Harris and Trump get together and give alternative points of view,” he said. “I still think he has a reasonable chance of winning because, in the end, the agenda of the issue favors him. But not if you're so angry that you've stopped reflecting the people you're trying to reach.”
