CNN anchor Abby Phillip was quick to throw President Biden under the bus during an interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” telling her that Democrats are silently screaming inside and freaking out after the debate and ABC interview.
When asked about his personal reaction to Biden's disastrous debate performance against former President Trump, he indicated that he simply could not believe his eyes.
“Well, I was sitting on the set and I was sitting next to David Axelrod. I had Anderson [Cooper] next to me, Van Jones, a few other people, Kate Bedingfield, who used to work for Joe Biden. And probably, I'd say within a couple of seconds, we all look at each other in silence. Kind of like, 'Are you seeing what I'm seeing?'” he candidly told Colbert.
Both Colbert and Phillip noted that it was a “tough night” for Biden and that “something wasn't right.”

“Something wasn't right. And somebody said, 'Uh oh.' And then we just kept watching and waited to see what happened,” Phillip said.
“Did someone say that in your mirror when you got home? Or was that someone else on the panel? Colbert asked.
“That was someone else on the set,” he replied.
The next day: The people most shocked this morning by Biden's performance are the Dem political class. Voters have been clear about their views on these two men and how age affects their ability to do the job of president for some time. From this week's NY Times poll: pic.twitter.com/1R50rZEH28

The conversation moved to ABC's George Stephanopoulos and his taped interview with Biden.
“I'm going to use a term that I really shouldn't because I'm not in the news, but what are your sources telling you? What are your sources telling you about the low-level mutiny among Democrats on Capitol Hill? Did that help?” Colbert asked, hoping beyond hope that the interview would at least put a band-aid on the cratered wound of the Biden campaign.
“I think it helped some people who wanted it to help. But for a lot more people, there's, like, the silent cry inside. I think people are still very nervous. And I actually got a call, I mean , I got a call the next day from a Democratic source who's not on the Hill, but someone who's very well connected. And the feeling was basically, this is so bad,” Phillip confessed.
A sanitized, scripted and taped interview wasn't going to cut it for Biden, who needed to prove to Democrats that his brain hadn't turned to mush. He did not save his candidacy. The interview only added to the angst on the left.

“After the interview with Stephanopoulos,” Colbert continued.
“This is after the Stephanopoulos interview. So from what I'm hearing, people are still freaking out. People are still freaking out about Biden staying on the ticket and what might happen if he doesn't, because that alternative is, for some people, as scary as the prospect of Biden staying on the ticket,” the CNN anchor stated.
Colbert wanted to know if Biden's Monday call to MSNBC's “Morning Joe,” along with his letter to congressional Democrats informing them he was going nowhere, made any difference on the issue.
Biden makes clear he'll stay in new letter to House Dems:
“The question of how to move forward has been well and truly aired for over a week. And it's time for it to end,” he writes. “Any weakening of resolution or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us.” pic.twitter.com/h7lm9sChxX— DJ Judd (@DJJudd) July 8, 2024
“No, no, not at all. I mean, not at all. … It's like a slow-motion roller coaster,” Phillip told her, stating that Biden's attempts to save his campaign just aren't cutting it.
