In the world of sophomore popularity contests that is the Democratic Party, policies and achievements were easily supplanted by good intentions and feelings, genuine or not. To that end, the fawnfest was recalibrated to complete the coronation of Vice President Kamala Harris, as the nominee had a programming gap that left CNN anchors wondering about the potential of Beyoncé or Taylor Swift.
“New details for you this morning on which A-list celebs are planning to be at the Democratic National Convention here in Chicago, where we are, as the party formally crowns Kamala Harris as its nominee. The rumors are really swirling.” anchor Sara Sidner said during “CNN News Central.”
“Everybody's talking about it, that two of the biggest names in music: Beyoncé, Taylor Swift…” he continued as co-host John Berman interrupted: “Is that it? of the biggest names or the most important names”.
“I think the two biggest ones. OK,” the joke continued, “we don't have to analyze it. Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, they could make appearances.”
“That was the force. How about the will? Who do we know will be here?” postulated that Berman as correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister was brought in to add more details and speculation.
“By the way, I'm with you, John,” he began, encouraging fangirling. “They're the two biggest names, of course … all eyes are on whether they're going to make it. But who knows who's going to be there,” Wagmeister continued as he confirmed the Monday-Thursday celebrity hosts were reported as Tony Goldwyn, Ana Navarro, Mindy Kaling and Kerry Washington.
“Now I'm told by convention officials that the role of these hosts will be similar to something at the Oscars, like an awards show. They'll come in, make an introduction, and then pop back in throughout the night to help guide the audience through programming”.
The correspondent noted that John Legend and Joan Jett were expected to perform at a party in Chicago and that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was hosting a panel with female Democratic governors that prompted Sidner to say, without a hint of irony, “You can't forget Veep ! I mean, he made a whole show about this situation.”
Sidner continued to dig into the speculation: “Beyoncé and Taylor, are they going to be here? Because that's what we really want to know.”
Recalling that Beyoncé offered Harris the use of her song “Freedom” for the campaign, Wagmeister had no confirmation, but noted how quickly Swift could be on board in a similar way to went out of his way to attend the Super Bowl to show support. her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
“Now remember she's on tour right now. She's in London, so she can't be there tonight. She can't be there tomorrow. She's a bit busy in London, but if her show ends on Tuesday, she might go up to a private jet and she might be there on Wednesday. “So we'll see. But Taylor's coming back to the States in October, so there's time for him to vouch.”
Although Swift had endorsed the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020 and a coalition of her supporters was pushing for her to continue her open support for the Democratic Party, former President Donald Trump had collected a against push of “Swifties for Trump” who used some AI-generated imagery as she declared, “I accept!”
The post came just days after Trump's campaign, supporters and the president himself had ripped Harris for appearing to use AI imagery to make his crowds appear larger than they actually were.
It also came after the president did as reported told Variety of Swift in June, “She has great star quality, she really does.”
“I think she's beautiful, very beautiful! I think she's very beautiful. I think she's liberal,” he said. “She probably doesn't like Trump. I hear she's very talented. I think she's very beautiful, in fact, unusually beautiful!”
Trump had also said: “Is he legitimately liberal? Isn't that an act? I'm amazed that a country star can be successful being a liberal.”
