A Thursday clip recently went viral of California Gov. Gavin Newsom admitting that San Francisco is being cleaned up because “luxury leaders are coming to town,” FOX News initially reported.
The annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit will take place this week in San Francisco and will host nearly a dozen foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping. Newsom admitted Thursday that San Francisco “needs to clean house” because of the publicity the event will bring to the city, seconds on FOX News.
“I know people say, ‘They’re just cleaning this place up because all these fancy leaders are coming to town,’ that’s true because it’s true,” Newsom said. said Thursday. “I am very excited to show this place to 21 stylish foreign leaders from around the world.”
“Anytime you host an event, by definition, you have people at home, you have to clean house,” Newsom said. “21 foreign leaders, you have tens of thousands of people from all over the world, what an opportunity to show the most extraordinary place in the world.”

residents of San Francisco sense the cleanup was a temporary “band-aid” rather than a permanent solution to the city’s problems. “They’re basically addressing the problem but not offering long-term solutions,” business owner Adam Mesnick told the New York Post.
“I’m outside what they consider the ‘containment zone’ for APEC, so the problem is coming into my area, which is already pretty saturated with drug activity. They’re very good at creating an il ·lusion and they’re really good for the performing arts,” Mesnick said.
Major retailers have pulled out of San Francisco as the city continues to struggle with an increase in drug overdoses, crime and homelessness. 80% of San Francisco residents said Crime is a major issue, and only 26 percent of voters said they would vote for the city’s incumbent Democratic mayor in the next election cycle.
Newsom’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
