Climate activists slow down Cologne airport operations, causing controversy

-

Climate activists from the group “Last Generation” halted operations at Cologne airport in Germany on Thursday. The group, known for their disruptive protests, took to the track to express their opposition to the use of fossil fuels and air travel. The demonstration caused numerous flight cancellations, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

Protesters broadcast their activities live from the runway, with one woman passionately urging people to join their cause, citing the imminent threat of climate collapse. Some activists went so far as to stick to the track in a show of defiance. Eight members of the group were arrested but later released.

The German Airports Association (ADV) strongly condemned the protest, calling it criminal extortion rather than a peaceful demonstration. Ralph Beisel, the CEO of ADV, criticized the activists for their disruptive behavior, saying it infringed on the personal rights of travelers who could not continue with their scheduled flights.

The Last Generation protests have a history of conflict with the public. A notable incident last year involved a woman in Germany, who was dubbed a “brutal blonde” by the European press, after she physically removed a climate change activist from blocking traffic in Bottrop, Germany. The woman was filmed dragging the activist by the hair to the side of the road, not once but twice, when the activist tried to block the road again.

The actions of The Last Generation highlight the growing tension between climate activists and the public, as well as the growing urgency of the climate crisis.
