In a shocking incident that has left Cincinnati reeling, a shooting has claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy and injured four other children and an adult. The city’s police chief, Terri Theetge, revealed that the gunman, believed to be in a sedan, fired 22 shots into a crowd of children in quick succession. The horrific incident took place shortly before 9.30pm on Friday in the city’s West End.
The victims included a 53-year-old woman, three boys aged 12, 13 and 15 and a 15-year-old girl. One victim remains in a stable condition in hospital. The motive for the shooting is still unclear, and authorities have not yet determined whether it was a random act of violence or a targeted attack.
Mayor Aftab Pureval expressed his disgust and shock at the incident, calling it “sick and unimaginable”. The shooting took place in a vibrant neighborhood, next to a local park and a historic elementary school. The mayor spoke of the “unimaginable trauma” the neighborhood is suffering, with neighbors showing their support for each other, albeit from the safety of their homes.
In a heartbreaking plea, Isaac Davis, the father of the boy who lost his life, urged the attacker to come forward. “When will this stop? Will this ever stop?” he asked, echoing the sentiments of a grieving city. “How many people have to bury their children, their babies, their loved ones?”
The mayor also addressed the issue of illegal guns in the city, stating that 40% of these firearms were stolen from cars. He urged gun owners to secure their guns and lamented both the prevalence of guns and the “inability to resolve differences peacefully.” As the investigation continues, Police Chief Theetge has vowed to bring those responsible to justice and urged them to hand themselves in.
