The CIA director was sent on a “very rare” personal mission to visit Israel as a show of force following the October 7 invasion by Hamas terrorists.

The visit appears to be an attempt to push Israel to take a more targeted approach in its war against Hamas. Obviously, the US wants pauses in the conflict so that aid can be transported to Gaza and some kind of strategy can be deployed to avoid civilian casualties. It’s a ploy unlikely to go down well with Israelis.
The News from New York reports that CIA Director William J Burns is following in Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s footsteps, traveling to Israel and other nations to try to militarily slow things down. Burns arrived in Israel on Sunday to speak with leaders and intelligence officials. It is the first stop on a tour through several countries.
After the outbreak of war in the Middle East, the Biden administration and its agencies began trying to expand intelligence sharing with Israel. They are interested in information about the hostages and ongoing attacks by Hamas. Burns is to be the face of intelligence cooperation in the region, according to a US official briefed on Burns’ trip.
On the one hand, the Biden administration appears to support Israel, but it has also tried to straddle the fence and support humanitarian aid to Gaza. The political dance began immediately after Hamas killed 1,400 people and kidnapped more than 200 on October 7 in Israel.

Since then, Israel has declared war and vowed to eliminate all Hamas terrorists responsible for the atrocities in a massive counter-offensive including an air campaign and a ground invasion of Gaza.
According to the Gaza health ministry and the New York Times, more than 9,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes since the attack took place.
“Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived on Friday to argue to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and key national security officials that there are ‘more effective ways’ to cripple Hamas than the intense air campaign.” NDTV World reported
“Burns, who has extensive experience in the region, visited as key intelligence leaders in Israel have been heavily criticized for failing to spot the attack and the wider Hamas threat,” he continued the news medium.

The New York Times referred to Burns as one of the Biden administration’s “most trusted voices” on Middle Eastern issues. He is called the White House’s “walking diplomat for problem solving.”
Biden officials say they are not telling Israel what to do. But they explain the US experiences in the Iraq war and stress that Israel should not make the same mistakes that the United States made after 9/11, according to The New York Times.
Burns is also expected to visit Jordan and try to mend fences there. King Abdullah II canceled a meeting with President Biden after a hospital in Gaza was hit by a failed rocket that resulted in casualties. It turns out the rocket was launched by Islamic militants, not Israel according to authorities.
The CIA director has a close relationship with King Abdullah. He was the ambassador to Jordan when King Hussein died and Abdullah came to the throne and the king has praised Burns’ diplomatic skills.
