China’s President Xi Jinping seems to be nonchalant to criticism against his push for more control. He, together with the senior Chinese officials, recently agreed to plans that would give the Communist Party even more influence over the country’s legal system.
Known for his tight grip on power, President Xi’s latest move has sparked concerns among human rights activists and political analysts alike. Critics contend that this measure would further diminish the independence of China’s courts and legal system, which is already under heavy state control.
The proposed reforms would give the Communist Party’s Central Committee the power to oversee the appointment of all judges – from the lowest courts up to the Supreme People’s Court – effectively ending the already limited independence of the country’s legal system. This move is seen as a significant step in Xi’s sweeping campaign to strengthen the party’s control over all aspects of Chinese society.
But despite the backlash and criticism, President Xi seems determined to forge ahead with his goal of building a more tightly controlled China. In a speech during the meeting with the senior officials, Xi emphasized the importance of “strengthening the party’s centralized and unified leadership in law-based governance and administration.”
Xi’s push for more control goes beyond the legal system. Over the past few years, he has tightened his grip on many aspects of Chinese society, including the media, academia, and the internet. His administration has also cracked down on dissent, arresting activists, lawyers, and journalists critical of the government.
One of the most significant measures Xi has taken is the abolishment of presidential term limits in 2018, effectively allowing him to stay in power indefinitely. This move was met with widespread criticism, with many accusing Xi of leaving China vulnerable to a return to authoritarianism.
Xi’s iron-fisted approach may be successful in controlling internal dissent, but it has come at a high cost, with critics alleging widespread human rights abuses and an erosion of democratic freedoms.
While the latest move to give the Communist Party more control over the legal system is concerning, it should hardly come as a surprise. Xi has made it clear that his goal is to create a China that is loyal to the Communist Party and its leader. As long as he and the party continue to hold power, they will use every tool at their disposal to maintain their grip on society.
