China and USA share the Gold Medal Glory

-

The 2024 Paris Olympics saw China and the United States tied for the number of gold medals, with two countries securing 40 golds each. This is the first time in history that there has been a tie for overall gold at the Summer Games. However, the United States took first overall with 126 medals compared to China's 91. The competition was intense, reflecting the ongoing geopolitical rivalry between the two nations.

China has become one of the world's most competitive sporting nations in recent decades, viewing its Olympic performance as a representation of national strength. In 2008, China surpassed the US in the gold medal count at the Beijing Games. In Paris, the Chinese team initially led the medal table due to their dominance in shooting and diving. However, the USA quickly caught up and eventually overtook China when the track and field events began.

China is only the third country, after the United States and the former Soviet Union, to lead the gold medal count at a Summer Olympics held outside its homeland. This achievement was celebrated by Chinese state media and social media users, who saw it as a testament to the success of China's modernization. However, there was also criticism of what was perceived as an unfair attempt by US officials to tarnish China's reputation with persistent doping allegations against its swimming team.

The Chinese swimming team faced intense scrutiny after revelations that almost half of the team Beijing sent to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics had tested positive for a banned performance-enhancing substance months earlier. The swimmers were cleared by the China Anti-Doping Agency (CHINA) shortly before the Tokyo Games, after it ruled that the positive tests were the result of contamination. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted this assessment without appeal.

The doping allegations sparked outrage in China, where the swimming team is seen as a source of Olympic glory. Many saw the accusations as an attempt by the US to sabotage the Chinese team at the Games. In response, CHINA called for more intensive testing of US track and field athletes, citing past doping controversies in the US. The Chinese embassy in Washington accused the US of using the doping issue to defame and suppress China.
