A San Francisco man who beat his girlfriend's 3-year-old son to death has been released on parole despite being sentenced to 25 to life in prison, and the only thing that can stop his release now is the governor of California Gavin Newsom.
In accordance with San Francisco Public Safety Newsconvict Patrick Goodman, now 49, killed his girlfriend's three-year-old son, Elijah Sanderson, on December 6, 2000, at their Ingleside home.
“The autopsy report detailed injuries ranging from a broken neck and broken ribs to a severed intestine and severed renal artery. 50 separate external injuries were also noted,” the local news outlet noted.
The 50 separate external injuries “resulted in catastrophic internal bleeding and rupture through the spleen, pancreas, bowel, kidneys and diaphragm.”
“His liver was pulverized. They also caused musculoskeletal injuries, including a broken neck and broken ribs,” according to San Francisco Public Safety News.

The ME reportedly found that some of the injuries had been caused by repeatedly spinning the boy's wrist against a wall.

Goodman later admitted that he had killed the boy in a fit of rage because the boy had let the family dog into the house.
Two years later, in 2002, Goodman was convicted of second-degree murder and child abuse and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
Fast forward to December 14 of last year, when, during a parole hearing, a representative for San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins argued that Goodman should remain behind bars.
“His murder robbed a baby of its fourth birthday,” Assistant District Attorney Victoria Murray-Baldocchi said. “Learning how to shave, his first kiss, going to college, making cards for his mom on Mother's Day, celebrating his brothers birthday.”
“I suggest that he is still in denial about how brutal his killing of this little innocent human was,” he added.
But his plea fell on deaf ears, and Parole Board Hearings Commissioner Michele Minor and Assistant Commissioner Dan Blake decided to grant Goldman parole.
“We find that Mr. Goodman does not currently pose an unreasonable risk to public safety and is therefore appropriate for parole,” Minor said.
To her credit, Jenkins, who has proven to be no soft-spoken criminal prosecutor, cried foul.

“We are talking about the murder of an innocent and vulnerable 3-year-old boy [a] brutal fashion,” he told the local station KRON.
“We have to be advocates for public safety and we have to make sure that people serve the time they were sentenced to, but also that when it's time for them to reintegrate into the citizenry, they're ready to do that . so as to be productive members of society,” he continued.
“And right now, we don't have faith or trust that this individual is prepared for this at this time. And that, again, poses a significant risk to public safety,” he added.
According to KRON, Jenkins' office is now in the process of firing off a letter to Newsom asking him to overturn the parole board's widely criticized decision.
talking with Fox Newsformer San Francisco police officer Britt Elmore said he's confident Newsom will overrule the board, but believes the governor should go one step further and launch an investigation into the board itself.
“See if they're in a position to be in those hearings,” he said. “This is the worst of the worst, and that's what our strictest laws are supposed to be for.”
Los Angeles County District Attorney candidate Jonathan Hatami agreed, telling Fox News the board's decision was “horrible.”
“I have attempted numerous high-profile murders of children,” he said. “If you kill a child, someone who is the most vulnerable in our society, you are a danger to our entire community. Someone who kills a child has the ability to kill anyone. Child killers are a serious danger to our community. Period.”
Members of the public agree and have begun calling on Newsom to intervene:

Revoke this parole decision. Please. You have young children and you know instinctively that this heinous murderer is beyond redemption. Life in prison period— Rene Drew (@ReneDrew7) January 25, 2024
@GavinNewsom please overturn the parole board and keep child killer patrick goodman in prison. A 3-year-old boy is a helpless victim. Also, I think a parole board review is needed. Who Frees a Convicted Child Murderer?
