Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, a leading figure in the Democratic Party, is facing backlash after it was revealed his campaign spent more than $30,000 on personal grooming expenses. According to reports from The Center Square, Johnson's campaign committee spent $4,000 on a hair salon and more than $20,000 on a makeup store, with a total of 42 separate expenditures on Makeup Majic.

When asked about the spending, Johnson defended himself by arguing that it was his way of supporting small businesses, especially those owned by black people. At a press conference, he made a bold appeal to journalists to join him in promoting these local businesses. In her own words, Johnson emphasized, “Go get your hair and makeup done by black people in particular.”
However, it should be noted that political campaigns are generally restricted from using funds for personal purposes, such as clothing or luxury purchases, as set forth in the Illinois Compiled Statutes. Despite this, Johnson tried to justify his actions by deflecting attention to other expenses his campaign allegedly covered, such as food, printing, and supporting black- and brown-owned businesses, as well as women-owned businesses.
Intriguingly and somewhat combatively, Johnson warned his critics about the afterlife consequences, stating, “If they don't think it's a good use to support small businesses, black businesses and browns, that's something they'll have to deal with when they meet their maker.”

Surprisingly, Johnson isn't the only Illinois mayor making headlines for exorbitant spending. Tiffany Henyard, a fellow Democratic mayor of Dolton, Illinois, faced scrutiny for her extravagant trips to popular destinations including Times Square, Atlanta and Austin, Texas. Critics pointed out that the funds were used for luxury first-class airline tickets, lavish stays at big-name hotels such as the Marriott and Four Seasons, and dinners at fancy restaurants.
In response to mounting criticism, Mayor Henyard took a defensive stance and played the race card by accusing his detractors of being anti-black. She lashed out in a video posted on X, stating: “Y'all should be ashamed of yourselves because you're all black. You're all black! And y'all sitting up here bashing and attacking a black woman who has power. Y'all you should be ashamed of yourselves.”
