Chicago-area high school clashed over segregated math courses for ‘black’ and ‘Latino’ students only

A Chicago-area high school has come under fire after it was discovered that the school offers segregated math classes.

Evanston Township High School District 202 (ETHS) offers calculus, precalculus, and algebra courses, which are only open to students who identify as black or “Latino.” The ETHS math curriculum for the next school year suggests that segregated classes will persist. One of ETHS’s pre-calculus courses describes: “[t]The course is restricted to students who identify as black students.” While another pre-calculus course mentions that it is only for “Latino” students, and a third course has no restrictions based on gender or race .

The disturbing report that an Illinois school is reintroducing segregation was reported by Tik Tok’s Twitter Libs sage.

As the Spectator’s Amber Athey reported, the high school offers racially segregated math classes, as can be found in the class list for the 2023-24 school year on the school’s website.

“There are at least five course offerings at Evanston Township High School that are only open to black or ‘Latino’ students,” Athey continued. “A course description for an Algebra 2 class, for example, states that ‘this course code is restricted to students who identify as Latino, all genders.’

ETHS also offers segregated AP calculus courses for black and “Latino” students. The separate courses have sparked a backlash online and on social media.

There is absolutely no excuse for a math class, or any class, to be open only to Latinos or black Americans. Does math change in any way based on who is learning it?” Gabriel Nadales, national director of Our America, told The National Desk. “That’s just ridiculous.”

But this is just one more example of bureaucratic employees who would rather divide Americans by race than look at what unites us,” Nadales added. “American students should not have to worry about their race when they learning precalculus”.

The exclusivity of the school’s classes has drawn the ire of critics, including Mark Perry, a professor emeritus at the University of Michigan and a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) in Washington, DC.

Perry has expressed that he will file a federal civil rights complaint against ETHS. She has previously filed complaints in similar cases, including one when she discovered that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offered scholarship and grant programs that excluded students based on their race and gender. One of Perry’s complaints led UNC to remove criteria for a nutrition scholarship it had claimed was only open to Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) populations.

ETHS has refuted allegations that it restricts students from taking AP classes based on race. According to Crisis in the Classroom (CITC), the school informed them that this process had never been done. The district said it has updated the wording of its course application guide to reflect its goals and practices.
