Chevrolet presents Silverado EV and Equinox EV, betting on the appeal of the legacy brand

-

Chevrolet is ready to test its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions with the launch of two new models, the Silverado EV and the Equinox EV. Despite the slowdown in electric vehicle adoption, GM's sub-brand is pushing ahead with its launches this year, a move that could pay off according to the brand's chief marketing officer, Steve Majoros. He believes Chevrolet is in a prime position for a new wave of practical EV buyers who prefer legacy brands to startups or Tesla.

Chevrolet is no stranger to electric vehicles, having been General Motors' electric poster child since the launch of the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid more than a decade ago. This year, the brand is taking its biggest leap yet, launching all-electric versions of its popular Silverado pickup truck and Equinox crossover. Alongside these vehicle launches, GM's Ultium brand is introducing a new line of home charging solutions designed to optimize electric car use for residential EV drivers.

However, the electric Silverado is a bit of a late entrant to the electric truck market, behind Ford's F-150 Lightning, Rivian's R1T and Tesla's Cybertruck. Despite this, Chevrolet remains optimistic about the truck's possibilities. The Silverado EV RST First Edition is currently on sale for $94,500, with more affordable work trucks expected to follow.

The Equinox EV, on the other hand, appears to be a better fit for today's electric car buyers, with its size, price and design aimed at competing with Tesla. The vehicle is priced at $43,295, with a more affordable LT trim starting at $34,995 that will be available for order later this year.

However, with hybrids becoming more popular as electric vehicle sales growth slows, it remains to be seen whether these new electric models from Chevrolet can compete. GM has reversed its plans to skip hybrids in the US market, but it's still unclear when those cars will arrive, which could put the Equinox EV at a disadvantage against hybrids from Ford or Toyota.
