Celtic fans defy club, fly Palestinian flags at football match

-

Thousands of Celtic fans defiantly threw Palestinian flags at a football match on Wednesday, despite the club asking them not to.

Celtic are now likely to face disciplinary action from UEFA, European football’s governing body. In 2016, the club was fined £9,000 after fans waved Palestinian flags during their 5-2 win over Israel’s Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

In a statement released before the game, Celtic had urged supporters not to display “banners, flags and symbols” related to the conflict.

The club said it was “aware of the strong feelings around the world on this issue” and that it “respected the right of all people to express their views”.

However, the club has also emphasized that it wants to be “open to everyone” and that it does not want to “exclude anyone from our community”.

The Green Brigade, a group of Celtic fans which has been suspended from getting tickets following the latest incidents, said it had distributed the flags outside the stadium.

Celtic players and coaches wore black armbands during the match as a “show of respect and support for all those affected by the conflict”.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw, meaning it has been over six years since Celtic won a Champions League game.

Manager Brendan Rodgers refused to be drawn on the pro-Palestine screen in a post-match press conference.

“I only think about football,” he told reporters.
