Brooke Shields breaks fashion rules with Crocs at the Tony Awards

Acclaimed actress and former Calvin Klein model Brooke Shields made a bold fashion statement at the 77th Annual Tony Awards, rocking a pair of sunny Crocs with her bright yellow Monique Lhuillier gown. Unapologetically revealing her unconventional choice of footwear, Shields explained that she had recently undergone foot surgery. The actress, known for her roles in theater productions such as “Chicago,” “Cabaret” and “Grease,” quipped, “Broadway gave me these broken feet, and now I'm fixing them.”

Shields' choice of Crocs, a brand often derided by fashion pundits for its chunky design and bright colors, aligns with what she calls her “fck it era,” a moment in her life in which she is adopting confidence and self-assurance. The 59-year-old actress has spoken about her excitement for this stage of her life, citing less insecurity and ego.

Founded in Boulder, Colorado in 2002, Crocs has been a polarizing footwear choice since its debut. Despite the initial success, the company suffered significant losses after the financial crisis of 2008. However, recent collaborations with celebrities and brands have revitalized the company. Special editions, such as a glow-in-the-dark collaboration with Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny and a long-running collaboration with Balenciaga, have contributed to a record year of earnings in 2023, with total revenue of almost $4 billion.

While it remains to be seen whether Crocs will become a red carpet staple, Shields' bold choice has been met with support from her fans. One social media user commented on the actress' Instagram post: “You're a trendsetter and so beautiful at it!” Another added: “We are completely obsessed.” With Shields leading the way, more celebrities may be able to embrace the comfort of Crocs on the red carpet.
