Kevin McCarthy came perilously close to losing power Tuesday as Democrats joined Republican rebels in the House to vote against an attempt to save the California Republican’s presidency from doom.
Democrats voted unanimously against a procedural motion that would have blocked an effort to oust McCarthy as House speaker, refusing to help a GOP leader they distrust and have repeatedly criticized for catering to “extremists from MAGA”.
A small but effective contingent of 11 GOP supporters prevailed. Asked if there were any deals left to be done to prevent him from being overturned when the actual motion comes to the floor later Tuesday, McCarthy told reporters: “These are the same people who have opposed me before. And they give the floor to the democrats”.
After a difficult and uncertain lobbying effort, Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, the leader of the movement to impeach McCarthy, finally secured a raft of Republican support to take his quest to the next level. The vote was 208-218.
Many are sharing their opinion about Kevin McCarthy on Twitter.
Every conservative lawmaker I’ve spoken to points to the debt ceiling deal as the moment when trust broke down between McCarthy and the conservatives who supported him in January. This lack of trust, not any specific political element in the CR/closure fight, is what paved the way for this afternoon’s vote. https://thefederalist.com/2023/06/01/democrats-victory-lap-over-mccarthys-debt-ceiling-surrender-tells-you-all-you-need-to-know-about-the-compromise/
Gavin Wax:
I wish House Republicans would fight as hard for everyday Americans as they do for Kevin McCarthy.
They never show this level of passion when it comes to the border, the opioid pandemic, the housing crisis, the national crime wave, the trade imbalance, inflation, or anything else.

lawyer Rogan O’Handley:
Vacant McCarthy: My Analysis:
I’m with Rep. @mattgaetz
McCarthy accepted the rules when he was voted in as president he doesn’t follow
Now he is punished, as simple as that
If Gaetz and others don’t hold him accountable, KM will continue to shower GOP voters with Uniparty concessions
Yes, I would prefer to continue to investigate the Biden crime family and fight as a united front against the Democrats, but at a certain point, we have to put our foot down and say “enough is enough.”
That time is now
Here’s what I think will happen:
McCarthy will be vacated from the position of president and we will go back to endless rounds of presidential votes
Do we have an heir apparent? No
I honestly hope McCarthy is voted back in as president after an extensive exercise in public humiliation, but only after more concessions are made to Gaetz and crew.
And that’s why we should all support Gaetz
Democracy is ugly, messy and uncertain, but real change can only happen when brave patriots take a firm stand
Gaetz and crew are the patriots taking this stand and giving even more power back to the people
Things are about to get interesting.
Here’s what could happen next:
The abandonment motion is likely to pass
The speaker becomes vacant *immediately*
Then a new president is voted for, as many rounds as needed like in January
McCarthy will likely run for president again
RINO Emmer is a name I have heard as well as running
