The one-woman meme machine whose Olympic performance set social media on fire had something to say about the naysayers who ripped off her bunny hop dancing.
Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, the 36-year-old Australian Olympic breakdancer, may not have been responsible for the event's elimination ahead of the 2028 competition, but the conversation generated by her display would have led observers to believe that she was .
As part of the event's debut, and only predictable inclusion in the international competition, Gunn's knifing, sprinkling and apparent animal impersonation reminiscent of both a kangaroo and a dinosaur had fueled the creative juices of social media users in a way she described as “devastating.” “
“Hi everyone. Raygun here. I just want to start by thanking everyone who has supported me. I really appreciate the positivity and I'm glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives. This is what I was hoping for. ” an Instagram post began. “I didn't realize that would also open the door to so much hate, which frankly has been pretty devastating.”
“While I went out and had fun, I took it very seriously. I pushed myself to prepare for the Olympics and gave it my all, really,” he continued. “I am honored to be part of Australia's Olympic team and to be part of Breaking's Olympic debut. What the other athletes have achieved has been phenomenal.”
The fun at the expense of Gunn's performance wasn't all that followed his Olympic debut, as many wondered if he had somehow cheated to qualify for the event when juxtaposed with other Australian competitors.
“Regarding the allegations and misinformation coming out, I would like to ask everyone to refer to the recent statement made by the AOC as well as the posts on the AUSBreaking Instagram page as well as the WDSF Breaking for Gold”. he noted in his post. “Fun fact for you: There are actually no points to break. If you want to see how the judges thought I compared to my opponents, you can see the comparison percentages for all five criteria on Olympics.com. All the results are there are”.
After gaining more than 40,000 signatures for an online petition claiming that Gunn had somehow “rigged” the ratings process, ESPN informed that Australian Olympic Committee chief executive Matt Carroll had written to Change.org demanding it withdraw the petition.
It claimed it “contained numerous falsehoods designed to generate hatred against an athlete who was selected to the Australian Olympic team through a transparent and independent qualifying event and nomination process”.
“It is a shame that such falsehoods made up by an anonymous person can be published in this way,” he continued. “It amounts to bullying and harassment and is defamatory. We demand that he be removed from the site immediately. No athlete who has represented their country at the Olympics should be treated this way.”
The AOC further stated: “Rachael Gunn does not hold any position with AUSBreaking or DanceSport Australia in any way. She is simply an athlete who competed in the qualifying event she won.”
Gunn concluded his video by stating that he was staying in Europe as part of a pre-planned trip and would have more to say when he returned to Australia.
“But I would really like to ask the press to please stop harassing my family, my friends, the Australian breaking community and the wider street dance community,” he said.
“Everyone has been through a lot as a result of this, so I ask that you please respect their privacy,” she added.
Breakdance's exclusion from the 2028 Olympics was decided before Gunn's performance, which prompted audience responses that included parodies of all kinds.
