Brazil’s Federal Public Ministry (PGR) urged Federal Supreme Court Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes to compel major social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn, to hand over detailed data on ALL of President Jair Bolsonaro’s followers.
The extraordinary request, which is part of an ongoing investigation into Bolsonaro’s alleged “criminal” activities, came just two days after the events of January 8, where Bolsonaro’s supporters entered Brazil’s National Congress.
The incident in question centers around a video, later removed, in which Bolsonaro was seen criticizing the electoral system.
Heading the investigation into the events of January 8, the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, Carlos Frederico Santos, has also asked Judge Moraes to renew the call to Meta to provide a copy of the controversial video. In addition, Santos asked for detailed reports on the video’s digital footprint, including metrics such as views, likes, shares, reposts, comments and any other quantifiable interactions.
Expanding the scope of the application, as reported by Metropolisthe PGR also requests access to all of Bolsonaro’s positions related to the elections, electronic ballots, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Armed Forces.
In particular, Santos has expressed firm resistance against two proposals previously made by the prosecutors of the Federal Public Ministry. The suggestions, presented in a petition during the investigation, called for the testimony of specialists in the field of political communication of extremist movements, as well as those dedicated to monitoring groups of supporters of Bolsonaro.
In Santos’ view, finding an expert capable of providing unbiased surveillance of Bolsonaro’s supporter groups, without the influence of any ideological or partisan bias, is fraught with “extreme difficulties.”
