Blaze News' Steve Baker says FBI has arrest warrant for J6 report: 'self-surrender' set for Friday

-

Investigative reporter Steve Baker revealed that the FBI ordered him to turn himself in on Friday and even told him what to wear when he did.

While The Blaze reporter was facing a pending arrest in December that he said was related to his “journalistic efforts” to cover the events of January 6, 2021 in Washington, DC, Baker said he does not know the specific charges for which he is turning himself in.

Baker reported that he was ordered to report to the FBI field office at 7 a.m. before being transported to the Dallas courthouse where he can meet with his attorneys.

The reporter also shared the agency's instructions that he should arrive in “underpants and sandals,” predicting that this was to give him the “personal humiliation treatment.”

he said Blaze News Tuesday evening that this was likely so they could “put him in an orange jumpsuit, handcuff him and do the 'prisoner transport routine'.”

“They didn't have to go that route,” Baker told Blaze News. “We've been told my charges are only misdemeanors. And my lawyers have been assured it will be an 'in and out' affair with 'no intention' to arrest me. But instead of issuing a simple warrant of appearance, they went the “warrant of arrest” route.

Baker noted that the charges are still unknown and that his attorneys have not been notified by the agency “because they believe Baker will post them on social media.”

Baker's attorney in Dallas, James Lee Bright, told Blaze News it was a “really unusual” move.

“Baker also said his legal team was told there was no request for detention in court, that bail was not required, and that he is expected to be released after the proceedings. Bright told the Blaze News that he expects Friday's hearing to be simple,” the outlet reported.

The reporter noted that neither he nor his legal team are aware of any “pre-trial travel restrictions, although this has been the norm for J6 defendants, even those charged with minor crimes.”

“It has also been universal that no J6ers can travel to Washington, DC, which for obvious reasons will have a detrimental impact on my work. We also don't know if there will be other restrictions or accompanying orders: gag order to talk about my case, no social media, limited social media, order to surrender devices and/or firearms,” Baker said. “All the unknowns.”

His lawyer said he was “disturbed” by the latest move as his client has been “fully compliant” throughout.

The federal government “more than three years later going after people who were legitimate journalists that day” is certainly intended to have an “absolute chilling effect,” his attorney told Blaze News.

In a statement, Blaze Media Editor-in-Chief Matthew Peterson said, “The federal government's treatment of Steve Baker is outrageous.”

“I'm not a depressive person, but I'm not happy about it,” Baker told the network. “I've prayed, 'Lord, let this cup pass from me,' but it seems He won't.”

U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, among many others, questioned why Biden's Justice Department is targeting Baker.

“The DOJ has no suspects in either the RNC/DNC pipe bomb investigation or the gallows, but they are targeting an independent reporter who simply documented what he witnessed on Jan. 6,” the Republican posted Georgia in response to Baker's message to X.

The sentiment was echoed by others on the platform.
