Biden’s Border Numbers Drop to Record Lows
The latest data reveals a significant decline in the number of migrants crossing the southern border unlawfully, marking the lowest monthly totals since January 2021. In June 2024, approximately 83,000 migrants were recorded, a substantial decrease from the 117,000 encounters seen in May 2024.
This downward trend has continued into July, with the daily average of encounters dropping below 1,900 in the past week. The Biden administration attributes this improvement to several key policy changes implemented earlier this year. These measures aim to tighten border security and manage lawful entries more effectively.
Impact of New Policies
The recent reduction in border crossings coincides with the introduction of a stringent policy in June that prohibits asylum at the southern border. This policy change has been a cornerstone of the administration’s strategy to curb unauthorized entries. Additionally, enforcement efforts by Mexican authorities have ramped up since the beginning of the year, further contributing to the decreased numbers.
On June 4, 2024, President Biden issued a presidential proclamation temporarily suspending the entry of certain noncitizens across the southern border. This proclamation, along with an interim final rule (IFR) issued by the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, has significantly restricted asylum eligibility for those who irregularly enter across the southwest land and southern coastal borders.
Enforcement and Repatriation Efforts
Since the proclamation and IFR took effect, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has removed or returned more than 70,000 individuals to over 170 countries. This enforcement has included over 150 international repatriation flights, underscoring the administration’s commitment to maintaining strict border controls.
The total number of southwest border irregular encounters in June, including individuals presenting at ports of entry without a CBP One appointment, was 88,612. This figure represents a 30% decrease from May 2024, highlighting the impact of the new policies and enforcement measures on the ground.
Despite these achievements, the political landscape remains turbulent. President Biden’s approach to border security continues to be a focal point as he eyes the upcoming presidential election. Additionally, the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump has heightened public interest in national security and border policies, which may influence public perception of the administration’s efforts. As the election nears, the effectiveness of Biden’s border policies will likely be scrutinized by both supporters and critics.
