BARI, Italy – President Biden announced a new 10-year security deal with Ukraine on Thursday, saying the pact sent a clear message to Russia that the United States and its allies will support Kiev in the long term.
“Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine's long-term credible defense and deterrence capabilities,” Biden said at a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Italy.
“We are not backing down. We stand together against this unlawful aggression,” Biden said. President Vladimir Putin of Russia “can't wait for us,” Biden added. “It cannot divide us. We will stand with Ukraine until they prevail.”
Zelensky called the security deal “historic” in remarks alongside Biden after the two leaders formally signed the pact.
