Biden-Trump race tightens, Trump leads by 1 point

In the latest national poll, former President Trump has narrowly edged out President Biden by one point in the race for the White House. This change comes after the first presidential debate and an assassination attempt against the former president. The poll also reveals that most voters believe Biden's age is a potential risk to US national security. However, self-identified Democratic voters still want Biden to stay in the race by a 10-point margin.

The survey also indicates that 61% of voters believe that the US is less respected globally than it was four years ago. This is a 54% increase from 2019 during the Trump administration. After a poor performance in the first presidential debate, 63% of voters believe Biden's age is a threat to national security, 71% believe the White House has been dishonest about the mental state of Biden and 63% doubt his involvement in making important decisions.

The poll shows a slight change in voter preference in the Biden-Trump matchup since June. Last month, Biden led by 2 points (50-48), but now Trump leads by 1 point (49-48). This change is mainly due to independent voters, who now favor Trump by 2 points, within the margin of error.

Among voters who believe Biden is putting America at risk, about a quarter still support him over Trump in a head-to-head race. Trump retains 95% of his 2020 supporters, compared to Biden's 91%, and is favored by 7 points among new voters.

In terms of demographics, Trump is the preferred choice among men, rural voters, whites without a college degree, and white evangelical Christians. Biden, on the other hand, is favored among women, Hispanic voters, suburban women and black voters. However, these figures are significantly lower than four years ago.

In a hypothetical matchup, Vice President Harris' standing against Trump has improved, with the race now by one point, mirroring the Biden-Trump contest. Despite losing some points after the debate, Biden's path to victory in November has become much more difficult, according to the poll.

The poll also reveals that 44% of voters have a favorable opinion of Harris, while 54% view her unfavorably. This is an improvement over last month. Biden's favorable rating has dropped 6 points among Democrats since June, and more Democrats now have a positive view of Harris than Biden.

Biden's job approval is down 3 points, with 42% approving and 58% disapproving. His approval ratings are lower than Trump's four years ago now. Biden approval is low among black voters, urban voters, women, self-described liberals, and 2020 Biden voters.

The poll concludes that the first presidential debate was largely a disaster for Biden, with voters giving him an average grade of D for his performance. However, Trump didn't fare particularly well either, receiving an average grade of C from voters.
