President Joe Biden was criticized by his fellow Democrats after US and British forces launched strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen on Friday morning.
The strikes they were in response to more than two dozen attacks on ships in Yemen by Iran-backed rebels since Hamas launched a terrorist. attack in various locations in southern Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people, including at least 30 Americans. Many Democrats argued that the strikes were a violation of the Constitution.
“@POTUS cannot launch airstrikes in Yemen without congressional approval,” said Rep. Cori Bush, D-Missouri. published to X, formerly known as Twitter. “This is illegal and violates Article I of the Constitution. The people do not want more of our taxpayer dollars going to endless war and the killing of civilians. Stop the bombing and do better with us.” .
“@POTUS is violating Article I of the Constitution by conducting airstrikes in Yemen without congressional approval,” said Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan. published. “The American people are tired of endless war.”
I WILL SEE:
Other House Democrats cited Article I of the Constitution in the wake of the strikes, which Biden confirmed in a statement late Thursday night.
“The president needs to come to Congress before he launches a strike against the Houthis in Yemen and gets us involved in another Middle East conflict,” said Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif. published. “This is Article I of the Constitution. I will defend it regardless of whether a Democrat or a Republican is in the White House.”
“These airstrikes have NOT been authorized by Congress,” said Rep. Val Hoyle, D-Oregon he tweeted. “The Constitution is clear: Congress has the sole authority to authorize military participation in foreign conflicts. Every president must first come to Congress and ask for military authorization, regardless of party.”
Former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii also criticized Biden for the strikes, saying he hadn't thought about the consequences.
“What they're doing here right now doesn't seem to be well thought out or considering what the ramifications of that will be and how it serves our national security interests, just like they didn't think about what the ramifications would be of taking the Houthis off the terrorist list a few years ago, just as they did not consider the ramifications of giving Iran more than $6 billion, much of which will not go to the welfare and humanitarian interests of the Iranian people,” Gabbard told Fox News. host Laura Ingraham.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
